Easy-Life Ferro iron fertiliser for aquarium plants
Ferro is an Easy Life liquid fertiliser that supplies readily absorbed iron to aquarium plants. It corrects chlorosis, the yellowing of young leaves that betrays an iron deficiency.
5 ml per 100 litres raises iron by 0.5 mg/L, in a 500 ml bottle.
The summary
- What it provides: stabilised iron, easily absorbed.
- How to dose it: 5 ml per 100 L adds 0.5 mg/L of iron.
- When to use it: when the young leaves turn yellow.
- What level to aim for: around 0.05 to 0.1 mg/L in a planted tank.
Bringing the green back to yellowing young leaves
Ferro, Easy Life's liquid iron fertiliser, is used to correct chlorosis, the yellowing of young leaves on aquarium plants caused by a lack of iron. Its stabilised iron stays available long enough to be absorbed. 5 ml in 100 litres raises the level by 0.5 mg/L, whereas a planted tank aims for about 0.05 to 0.1 mg/L.
Iron is not an element that plants consume in large quantities, but they cannot do without it: it is involved in making chlorophyll, the green pigment that captures light. In your aquarium it disappears quickly, because it oxidises in well-oxygenated water, becomes insoluble and settles out. Fish supply almost none, so a planted tank, and even more so a brightly lit one, often ends up short of it. Ferro supplies stabilised iron, which stays available long enough for your plants to absorb it.
🟡 Recognising chlorosis
Iron deficiency shows first on the young leaves at the tips of the stems: they come through pale, yellow or almost white, while their veins stay green for longer. This is known as iron chlorosis. Older leaves keep their colour because, once iron has been fixed in a leaf, it is not redistributed to the new growth. This difference lets you tell an iron deficiency apart from a nitrogen or potassium deficiency, which affects the lower leaves first. An iron drop test confirms the diagnosis before you correct anything.
Pale young leaves
This yellowing between green veins is the most typical sign.
Red plants
They need more iron to keep their colour.
Strong lighting
Rapid growth uses up the available iron faster.
Highly oxygenated water
Iron oxidises faster there and becomes unusable.
In a planted aquarium, the usual target is an iron level of 0.05 to 0.1 mg/L, and rarely more than 0.2 mg/L. Iron is consumed and oxidises within a few days, which makes small, repeated additions more effective than one large dose that disappears before it has been used. An excess does nothing for your plants and can instead encourage certain algae: so every addition starts from a measurement.
Chelated iron powder for large volumes
If you are fertilising a soilless crop or an aquaponic system of several hundred litres, the 11% DTPA chelated iron works out much cheaper per litre treated. It is dissolved in a little water before being poured in, and its DTPA form remains available up to a pH of around 7.5. Ferro keeps the advantage for an aquarium or a small volume, where it can be dosed directly by the millilitre.
💧 Dosing in small steps
According to the bottle, 5 ml in 100 litres raises the iron level by 0.5 mg/L. This is a strong dose, which serves as a reference rather than a routine ration: Ferro is used when you see a deficiency or your test measures one, starting low. In a 120-litre aquarium where the young leaves are turning pale and the test reads almost zero, 1 ml is enough to raise the level by a little under 0.1 mg/L, which brings the tank into the target range. Test again a few days later and increase in small steps if the new leaves stay pale.
Pour in the dose in the morning, when the lighting comes on, near the filter outlet so that it spreads throughout the tank. Shake the bottle before use, close it tightly and keep it away from light and heat. If your tank houses shrimp, start with half a dose and watch their behaviour over the following days, as they react to changes in the water more quickly than fish do.
🌱 In aquaponics
Iron is the element most often lacking in aquaponics. Fish feed contains very little, and the pH of 6.4 to 7.5 that suits both fish and bacteria makes it less available to the roots. Lettuces and herbs then yellow at the heart, and tomatoes turn pale at the top. In your small indoor system, a few millilitres of Ferro a week, dosed according to the test, correct this shortfall without harming the fish. The article on iron deficiency in aquaponics details the symptoms and the thresholds to watch.
In a new system, always start with a small dose, then increase it according to how the plants respond. The iron added breaks down within a few days in lit, oxygenated water: it does not build up from one week to the next, but a one-off overdose benefits algae. Record every addition and every measurement in a notebook. After a few weeks, you will know how much your system actually consumes, and the correction will become a routine that takes a few seconds.
