This complete CO2 kit for planted aquariums is available in three sizes, for 200, 400 or 600 litres: the Set 200 comes with a disposable cylinder, while the Set 400 and 600 use a refillable cylinder. A pressure regulator, diffuser, pipe and inline drop checker are included, and two versions incorporate a solenoid valve that cuts the gas supply at night.

Complete CO2 fertilisation kit, for 200 to 600 litres, with or without solenoid valve

A densely planted aquarium consumes more carbon than the water naturally supplies, and that is exactly what this kit addresses. You receive the complete installation: the cylinder, the pressure regulator, the pipe, the diffuser, and everything needed to measure the result. Three sizes cover tanks up to 200, 400, and 600 litres, and two versions include a solenoid valve that shuts off the gas at night. Adjustment is made in bubbles per minute, and the reading is taken from the permanent test kit that stays in your tank. This type of installation is not essential for a planted tank, but it transforms what you can grow in it, and above all, the speed at which plants gain the upper hand over algae.

📦 What the box contains

The starter kit includes a 500 g CO2 bottle with integrated base, a precision pressure regulator, a 360-degree adjustable pipe fitting, 3 m of CO2-resistant pipe in 4/6 mm diameter, a safety diffuser rated up to 400 litres with bubble counter and non-return valve, quintuple water test strips, a long-duration CO2 test kit and its reagent liquid. There is nothing else to buy to get started, sparing you the list of missing small parts that a piecemeal installation always ends up demanding. The components of a CO2 system must be compatible with one another right down to the thread pitch of the regulator, and that is precisely where the first evenings of an improvised build tend to disappear.

🔧 Disposable or reusable

Le Set 200

It takes a disposable, recyclable 500 g bottle, suitable for an aquarium of up to 200 litres.

Le Set 400

It holds a reusable bottle, suitable for an aquarium up to 400 litres.

Le Set 600

It also takes a reusable bottle, suitable for a 600-litre aquarium.

Plants only take up carbon in the presence of light. The solenoid valve closes the gas supply when the lighting turns off and reopens it in the morning, avoiding CO2 being introduced into water that cannot use it. It is available as a separate accessory, and two versions of the kit include it as standard: the Set 400 and the Set 600. A sixth version combines the Set 600 with the solenoid valve but without the cylinder, for those who already own one. If your lighting already runs through a programmable timer socket, you already have half the setup in place.

Take the permanent test seriously

The long-term CO2 test supplied stays in the tank and changes colour continuously, telling you day after day whether your bubbles-per-minute setting is correct. Complement it with pH monitoring, since dissolved CO2 lowers this value, and with a choice of plants that justifies the setup. A tank with three plants does not need 600 litres of coverage, and the money will be better spent on lighting and the plants themselves.

A pressurised cylinder remains a gas appliance

Stand the bottle upright on its base, away from heat, and never loosen the regulator on a full bottle. The pipe supplied is CO2-specific, as an ordinary aeration pipe allows gas to permeate through its wall and will empty the bottle within a few weeks. When the bottle is empty, a replacement disposable bottle screws onto the same base.

🫧 Day-to-day adjustment

The bubble counter on the diffuser provides a visual reference, and the non-return valve protects the regulator from water back-flow. Adjust the flow rate by a few bubbles per minute, then allow the permanent test to respond before making further changes. A CO2 setup stabilises over several days, not in a single evening. The plants that benefit most are fast-growing ones, and they also need light and nutrients, without these, carbon alone will do very little. Allow a good week before judging a setting, and note down every change you make; a three-line log will stop you going back and forth between two similar values.

🧮 Choosing the size

The size should be chosen based on the actual volume of your aquarium, after deducting décor, not the volume printed on the original packaging. A tank rated at 240 litres filled with rocks and sand often holds around 200 litres of water, and it is this figure that matters. Two other criteria then come into play. First, planting density: a heavily planted tank consumes more CO2 at an equivalent volume. Second, autonomy: a larger bottle on a small tank makes no difference to the regulator setting, but noticeably extends the time between refills, which is a genuine advantage when the bottle is tucked away at the bottom of a hard-to-reach cabinet.

🔁 Autonomy and recharging

The life of a cylinder depends on the flow rate set and the daily injection period, not on the volume of the tank. A disposable 500 g cylinder typically lasts a few months on an average tank set at a sensible flow rate, and a solenoid valve extends that by a good third by cutting off the supply overnight. A refillable cylinder is topped up at a gas supplier, which works out considerably cheaper per gram but requires dropping it off and collecting it. Plan your refill before you run out, as a tank accustomed to CO2 reacts noticeably to an interruption of several days, with algae taking advantage of the imbalance. Note the start date on the base, and order the next fill when the bubble counter starts needing a wider opening to maintain the same flow rate, a sign that the pressure is dropping.

🌿 Not suitable for a food-growing system

On an aquaponics circuit, this equipment has no place, as it is designed for a planted ornamental aquarium. The balance of a food-producing system depends on pH and the nutrients supplied by the fish, not on gas injection. Adding CO2 to water that feeds growing beds would also lower the pH at precisely the moment when the biofilter bacteria work best in slightly alkaline water, which would amount to disrupting filtration in order to feed plants that grow above water and draw their carbon directly from the air.

Three ways to add carbon to a planted tank.

A bottle to pour in every day, a fermenting tank, or a pressurised cylinder: the choice comes down to the space you have and how much daily involvement you are prepared to accept.

An empty unit calls for a different solution than a cluttered shelf Carbon can be supplied in three ways, and it is the available space that rules out one of the three first.
