A clean cut, at the right angle, for each type of plant
JBL ProScape scissors are aquascaping tools made of stainless steel manufactured in Japan, which trim aquarium plants without crushing the stems. They come in six models: straight, curved, wave or spring-loaded. The 20 cm models suit tanks 30 to 40 cm high, and the 30 cm ones tanks of 50 cm and more.
An aquarium plant needs regular trimming to keep its shape, and clean cutting so that it regrows. A cut made with blunt scissors crushes the stem, which then rots at that point instead of producing new shoots. JBL ProScape scissors are made in Japan from stainless steel that resists wear and corrosion. Their length lets you reach the bottom of the tank without plunging your whole arm in, and each of the 6 models is designed for a specific task.
✂️ Six shapes, six uses
On the label, the letter S stands for scissors and the number for their length in centimetres, so you can tell them apart at a glance. The straight models, S20 and S30, cut stems and prepare plants out of the water, for example to remove the rock wool from plants sold in pots. The curved models have blades angled at about 25°: they trim foreground plants and stems right at substrate level, without your hand hiding the cut. The S20 wave, with its double curve, maintains carpeting plants and reaches areas behind the decor. The small spring-loaded S16 opens by itself: your hand only has to close it, which makes cutting mosses and stripping the leaves from stems more precise and less tiring.
Tall stems
The straight S30 models reach the bottom of a large tank.
Foreground
The curved blades cut flat, right down to the substrate.
Carpeting plants
The S20 wave follows the contours of the ground.
Mosses and leaf trimming
The spring-loaded S16 works effortlessly.
Choose the length according to the height of your aquarium. The 20 cm models suit tanks 30 to 40 cm high and work out of the water; the 30 cm ones reach the bottom of tanks 50 cm and taller without wetting your wrist. For most planted aquariums, a straight pair and a curved pair cover most needs, and the wave and spring models come next, depending on the plants you grow.
🌿 Trimming without damage
Rinse and dry the scissors after each use
Even stainless steel can show rust marks if it stays damp. Clean the scissors thoroughly after each trimming session, dry them, then store them somewhere dry. This keeps them sharp and keeps the joint moving smoothly.
Monitoring iron in a planted tank that is trimmed often
Regular pruning stimulates growth, and new shoots consume iron. The Fe iron drop test tells you whether your fertilisation is keeping pace: young leaves that turn pale between the veins indicate a deficiency. You can then adjust the fertiliser before your plants weaken.
Cut your stems just above a node, where the leaves emerge: the plant develops new shoots there and becomes bushier. Take a bunch of Rotala that reaches the surface of a tank 45 cm deep: cut each stem 15 cm from the substrate with the straight S30 scissors, then replant the cut tops alongside, and they will root within a few days. For a carpeting plant, run the curved or wave scissors flat across the top, taking off 1 to 2 cm at a time, before the lower layers go short of light.
📅 How often to trim
Next, remove the cut pieces with a net or tongs, because if left in your tank they would drift to the filter or decompose on the bottom. Regular trimming, every 2 to 3 weeks in a fast-growing tank, is better than a severe trim every 2 months, which unbalances the plants and leaves room for algae. For algae on the glass and on broad leaves, the JBL ProScape cleaning glove complements the scissors.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, culinary herbs such as basil are harvested by successive trimming, just above a node, which extends the harvest for weeks. In a dense grow bed, long, slender scissors reach the stem without crushing neighbouring plants, where garden secateurs struggle. The guide to plants to grow in aquaponics presents the crops that lend themselves to these harvests.
