45 L hydroponic pot pack: nutrition and pH control
This kit combines the Terra Aquatica 45-litre hydroponic pot, its continuous aeration pump irrigation, TriPart nutrition in three one-litre bottles, and everything needed to measure and adjust pH.
The kit is available in two versions: with the 20 litres of clay pebbles that fill the growing chamber, or without, if you already have your own grow medium.
The summary
- What you receive: the complete 45 L pot, TriPart Grow, Micro and Bloom in 1 L each, the pH- adjuster in powder form and a pH test in drops.
- Two versions: with the 20 L of clay pebbles that fill the growing chamber, or without, if you already have your own grow medium.
- What you can grow: one seasonal plant, tomato, aubergine, cucumber or pepper, or two more compact ones, on 45 L of reservoir.
- No timer needed: the air pump runs continuously, using 1.8 W and 0.04 kWh per day. There is nothing to programme.
- How to choose: it is the smallest of the three growing packs, the one that needs the least space and the least adjustment.
- How it arrives: 11 to 17 kg depending on the version, in several parcels that may arrive separately.
45 L pot, complete nutrition and pH control, with or without the clay pebbles
This pack includes the pot, the nutrients and everything needed to measure and then correct the pH, as well as, in its version with grow medium, the clay pebbles for the growing chamber. It holds one seasonal plant, or two more compact ones, for the whole season, with 45 litres of reserve beneath the roots and nothing to programme.
💨 Circulation without a water pump
The 45-litre pot has no water pump. A small 1.8 W air pump sends 1.3 litres of air per minute into a tube running to the bottom of the reservoir; the bubbles carry the solution up a column, which releases it as a shower over the grow medium through a perforated ring. This means there is no electrical part in the water: only air travels through the tube. The pot has just one moving part, no timer, and uses 0.04 kWh per day, as the pump runs day and night. The transparent level tube shows the reserve at a glance, and the shower falling from the ring confirms that the circuit is working. Finally, position the air pump above the level of the solution; otherwise a power cut could cause the solution to flow back up the air pipe towards it.
🪨 Clay pebbles
Clay pebbles hold almost no water, and that is exactly what we want here: the circulation delivers the water, and the grow medium only serves to hold the plant and let air through. In a pot that is constantly irrigated, a water-retentive grow medium would suffocate the roots within a few days. The pebbles supplied range from 8 to 20 mm, and the 20 litres fill the growing chamber in one go. Rinse them in clean water until it runs clear: new pebbles release a fine dust that clogs the column and the ring. They can then be reused from one season to the next, a thorough rinse being enough between crops.
The pot
A 45 L pot in recycled polyethylene, with its growing chamber, its pumping column and its level tube.
The pump
A 1.8 W air pump, 1.3 litres of air per minute, placed out of the water and connected by a simple tube.
Nutrition
Three TriPart bottles, Micro, Grow and Bloom, covering growth as well as flowering.
The check
A powdered pH adjuster and a 60 ml drop test, to measure and correct every week.
With or without the pebbles
The version with grow medium adds two bags of 10 L clay pebbles, exactly the volume of the growing chamber: no surplus, no shortfall. The version without is for you if you already have pebbles or prefer another inert support.
Rooted plant, dissolved pH, goggles
Never sow directly into the clay balls: the pot takes a plant that is already rooted, in a small pot or as an established cutting. Do not pour the dry pH corrector into the reservoir, dissolve it first. And wear goggles when measuring out the Micro, the only one of the three bottles to carry the Danger, H318 warning, which causes serious eye damage.
🧪 Micro, Grow and Bloom
The TriPart range splits nutrition into three. Calcium, iron and trace elements come from the Micro, with an NPK formula of 5-0-1, present from seedling to harvest, while the Grow, at 3-1-6, supplies the nitrogen and potassium for growth and the Bloom, at 0-5-4, provides the phosphorus and potassium for flowering. In full growth and in hydroponics, allow 1.8 ml of Grow, 1.2 ml of Micro and 0.6 ml of Bloom per litre of solution; in flowering, the Bloom rises to 2.4 ml and the Micro to 1.6 ml. Pour each bottle into the water separately, never one concentrate into another. These doses apply to soft water; on water already high in calcium and magnesium, the Micro dose should be reduced slightly, otherwise the starting conductivity is too high before the plant has absorbed anything.
📈 The pH, week after week
In a closed circuit, the pH drifts, as the plant takes up ions unevenly while evaporation concentrates what remains. Outside the useful range, elements that are in fact present in the reservoir become unavailable, and you see the leaves yellowing even though the solution is correctly dosed. Keep it within the useful range of 5.5 to 6.5, aiming for 5.8 to 6.2, and always adjust last, once all three bottles have been added. The powdered corrector dissolves at 1 g per 5 to 6 litres of water, and this correction solution is added in small amounts, measuring after each addition. Our article on pH regulation explains the method in detail. The check reading is taken an hour after the correction, once the circulation has mixed the 45 litres, and never straight away.
🪴 The 45-litre margin
Such a volume under a single plant leaves room for error. The solution is completely renewed every 2 to 3 weeks and, in between, you only make up for evaporation with clean water. The pot measures 47 x 47 cm and is 43 cm high, and weighs 6.73 kg empty, which means you can position it before filling it rather than moving it full. The 60 ml test bottle gives around 1,000 measurements, enough to cover several seasons at one reading a day. This inertia also affects temperature: a body of water of this size cushions the swings between day and night, and helps you stay below the 22 °C above which dissolved oxygen becomes scarce.
🌱 Which plant for this pot
A single growing chamber but a large reserve volume makes this pot best suited to long-cycle, vigorous plants: tomato, aubergine, pepper, cucumber or courgette trained upwards. Two more compact plants of the same species, two chilli plants for example, can also share the pot, since they have the same solution requirements. A lettuce would also fit, without using up a quarter of the available reserve, and a climbing plant will need a stake that is independent of the pot, as the lid is not designed to withstand lateral strain. If you are new to soilless growing, our guide to getting started with indoor hydroponics covers the vocabulary and basic techniques, and what to plant season by season helps you choose the plant that will occupy the pot.
