Drain fitting for W-shaped growing gutter, 185 mm
This end cap closes the end of a 185 mm W-section above-ground gutter and drains the leachate through a 25 mm outlet. Supplied with its stopper, it also serves as a closed end cap at the high point of the run.
The summary
- What you receive: a drain fitting and its cap.
- Its role: to close the end of the line and let the leachate out through 25 mm.
- How many to plan for: two per line, one open at the bottom, one capped at the top.
- Where the water goes: to a collection container or back to the reservoir.
To close off a 185 mm W-shaped gutter and let the leachate out through 25 mm
In soilless growing on slabs, some of the irrigation water runs through the grow medium and drains out beneath the plants: this is the leachate. The W-shaped soilless gutter collects it in its two channels, and this drain fitting gives it an outlet. It closes the end of the gutter and carries the water to a 25 mm socket, to which you connect a pipe. Without this outlet, the leachate would overflow at the end of the line and end up on the greenhouse floor, where it keeps the air humid and encourages foliage diseases.
💧 The 25 mm outlet
The end cap matches the 185 mm W profile and is placed at the end of the gutter, on the low-point side, since the line is laid with a slight slope so that the water drains away by itself. The two channels converge towards the outlet sleeve, so the leachate does not stagnate under your bags. The stopper supplied with the part closes this sleeve: placed at the high point, the same fitting becomes a closed end cap. For growing in bags, a slope of about 0.5% is enough, that is 1 cm of drop for a 2 m gutter. Check it with a spirit level before gluing or siliconing the end caps, because a slope is hard to correct once the line is fixed in place.
25 mm outlet
A flexible pipe fits over the sleeve and carries the leachate away.
Stopper supplied
It uses the same fitting as the closed end cap at the high point.
Silicone or glue
Silicone keeps the line removable, PVC glue fixes it permanently.
♻️ Where to send the leachate
With run-to-waste, the pipe carries the leachate to a collection container, whose water then irrigates a soil-grown vegetable patch. In a closed circuit, the leachate goes back to the reservoir and then returns to the drippers, which saves water and fertiliser, but the solution coming back from the pads no longer has quite the same composition as the one that left. For a 6 m line, you will need three 2 m gutters, two joining fittings and two drain fittings, one open at the low point towards the container or the reservoir, the other capped at the high point.
Measuring the pH and conductivity of the return
In a closed circuit, measure the run-off at the end of the line as often as the solution in the reservoir. The pocket pH, EC and TDS tester reads pH and conductivity with a single device, directly in the container. When growing on slabs, the conductivity of the drainage is compared with that of the solution supplied, and a more concentrated drainage tells you that salts are building up in the grow medium. You then adjust the fertiliser dose or the watering volume before any symptom appears on the foliage.
No standing water under the growing plugs
The open fitting goes at the lowest end of the line, and the drainage slits in the grow blocks are cut on the same side, at the low point of each block. If it is laid flat or against the slope, the water stagnates in the channels and under the grow medium, which deprives the roots of air. Run clean water through the empty gutter before placing the blocks: the water should flow straight to the outlet without pooling.
🐟 The return to a pond
In aquaponics, the solution that waters the pellets is the pond water, loaded with the nitrates that the filter bacteria produce from the fish waste. The drain fitting then lets you send the leachate back to the pond through a pipe, so the water stays in the circuit instead of being lost. This water has passed through the grow medium before returning to your fish: monitor its pH, aiming for the range of 6.4 to 7.5, which suits fish, bacteria and plants alike. The guide to regulating pH in aquaponics details the possible corrections.

It covers preparing your order and then the transit time quoted by the carrier, counted in working days.
It is not a guaranteed delivery date: public holidays, peak periods, customs or a carrier delay can extend it. The exact amount, in your currency, is worked out in the cart once your address is entered.
The fitting is a light item that travels as a simple parcel, on its own or with the gutters from the same order. Dispatch is from the workshop in Robassomero, near Turin. The exact costs and final delivery times are shown in the basket once the address has been entered. Outside the European Union, import duties and taxes remain payable by the recipient.
