These three parts fit a 100 × 50 mm profile NFT gutter: the solid cap closes the head of the channel, the outlet cap returns the solution through a 32 mm socket, and the joiner connects two channels end to end.
The summary
- What they are: the three parts that close, drain and extend a 100 x 50 mm NFT channel.
- How many to buy: one blanking cap and one outlet cap per line, and one joiner between two channels.
- How to fit them: with PVC cement or silicone, after a test with clean water.
- How they arrive: singly, in packs of 8 or 16, part by part.
Solid plug, outlet plug and joiner for a 100 x 50 mm NFT channel
An NFT gutter supplied without end caps arrives open at both ends, and it is up to you to decide how it closes, where it drains and what it connects to. These three moulded parts with a 100 x 50 mm profile each answer one of those questions. You choose them separately, singly or in a set, depending on the number of lines you are building.
🧩 Three parts, three roles
Solid plug
It closes the head of the channel, on the side where the solution arrives, and stops light reaching the roots.
Outlet plug
It closes the lower end of the channel and lets the solution drain back to the tank through a 32 mm sleeve.
Junction
It joins two channels end to end, which lengthens a line without an intermediate end to seal.
The count is made per line, not per channel. A growing line, whether it has one channel or several, needs one solid end cap at its high point and one outlet cap at its low point, while each connection between two channels needs a coupling. For three 2 m channels placed end to end, that is 6 m of growing length, you should therefore allow for one solid end cap, one outlet cap and two couplings. Beyond a dozen metres, it is better to open a second line, because the plants at the end would receive a solution already depleted by those at the start.
💧 Watertightness and fittings
These parts slot onto the profile, then are sealed with PVC cement or silicone so they do not weep. The choice depends on the future of your line: silicone can still be removed if you reconfigure it, whereas PVC cement holds for good. In both cases, the perforated channel lid stays removable, since the seal only concerns the body of the gutter. Finally, the sleeve of the outlet cap takes a 32 mm polypropylene push-fit fitting or a PVC fitting of the same diameter, which carries the solution to your reservoir.
The unbounded gutter to be fitted out
These parts are made for the 100 x 50 mm NFT channel, 2 m, without end caps, supplied open at both ends with its perforated lid and its pots. Cut it to the length of your support if needed, then close the head end with the plain cap and the foot end with the outlet cap. If you would rather have a channel sealed at the factory, the module with glued end caps arrives ready-fitted and needs none of these parts.
A trial with clear water before gluing
Dry-fit each piece, lay the channel at its slope, then run clean water along the whole line before sealing anything. A leak at a joint then shows up straight away and can be fixed on an empty channel. Once the PVC glue has set, the piece cannot be taken apart again.
🐟 The return to the pond
In aquaponics, the solution leaving the outlet cap returns to the pond or to the sump, and the 32 mm pipe that carries it keeps its slope all the way so that no deposits are left behind. The two caps also play a less obvious role, because they shut the channel off from light. Water exposed to light quickly turns green, and algae then reach the root zone before passing into the pump. A properly closed channel therefore keeps the water clearer, which matters all the more when that water is heading back to your fish.
