This double-wall PVC NFT growing channel measures 1.8 m with a 100 by 80 mm profile, offering 8 positions spaced 200 mm apart beneath a removable pre-drilled lid. It is supplied without end caps: the fittings are ordered separately and glued during assembly — either the solid end cap or the 32 mm outlet end cap — and a pre-assembled version with drainage on both sides is also available.

1.8 m double-wall channel supplied bare, end fittings to assemble and glue
A factory-sealed channel fixes its configuration, drainage on both sides, or drainage and end cap. As long as your run matches what the manufacturer intended, it works perfectly well. The moment it doesn't, you need a bare channel, and this is the one.
The profile does not change by a single millimetre compared to the closed version, with 100 by 80 mm, a double wall, 1.8 m in length and eight slots spaced 200 mm apart. The only difference lies at the two ends, which arrive without end caps, so you decide for yourself what each one becomes. The cover, the stiffening ribs and the smooth inner surface are those of the closed version, meaning that a bare channel and a terminal channel sit side by side on the same run without anything to tell them apart once installed.
🧩 Configuring both ends
Each end takes whichever fitting you choose. The solid end cap seals one end and blocks out light on the inlet side. The 32 mm drilled outlet cap manages the return flow to the reservoir on the outlet side. A standalone channel therefore needs one of each, whereas a channel positioned in the middle of a run needs two drilled caps.

A glued fitting cannot be taken apart
Sealing is done with PVC adhesive or silicone, and PVC adhesive is permanent on this material. Dry-fit your connectors, set the channel at its slope, run clean water through it, and only glue once the route has been verified. A removable silicone remains the sensible choice if you think you may reconfigure the line later, especially as an installation almost always changes after a season.
Count your nozzles before ordering
The calculation is done once and for all from your channel layout. A run of three channels in series requires one solid end cap at the head and five drilled end caps for the rest, whereas three independent channels require three of each. Also plan for grow cups to fit the diameter of the eight planting positions, as a bare channel is supplied without end fittings or cups.
What you gain is configuration freedom: a run of three channels where only the last one is closed, a water inlet through a drilled end rather than through the top, a spare channel closed at both ends until it's needed. None of these configurations exist in a factory-sealed version. What it costs is assembly time and two additional purchases per channel, not to mention waiting for the adhesive to cure before the first fill. The question must be answered at the planning stage, not during assembly, because a channel that has already been glued cannot be undone.
🔩 Bare or with bonded terminals
The decision comes down to your system layout, not the price. If your run fits one of the two standard configurations, the pre-glued fitting version spares you the bonding work on an otherwise identical channel, and saves you an evening's assembly. If you are building an unusual run, planning to modify it later, or want full control over where the water ends up, the bare channel is the only option that allows for that. One last point worth noting before you order: the channel length is 1.8 m, not 2 m despite its common name, so do check your measurements before cutting anything.
🌾 What grows in this profile
With 80 mm of clearance under the lid and eight positions spaced 200 mm apart, this channel is designed for plants that spread wide and stay put, strawberries, basil grown as a bush, branching herbs. The double wall adds an air gap that buffers the temperature difference between afternoon and the end of the night, which matters in a greenhouse that is not heated. A short-cycle lettuce crop also does very well here, but the generous spacing means fewer plants per metre compared with a narrower profile, so the choice really comes down to what you grow most of the time.
🧼 Channel maintenance
An NFT channel is cleaned between crops, and the double wall changes nothing in that regard. Remove the net cups, dismantle the run if the end caps are silicone-sealed, then run a long brush or bottle brush along the full length to remove the brown film that builds up over time. This biofilm reduces the effective cross-section of the flow and eventually traps dead roots, causing the overflows that are wrongly attributed to the pump. A rinse with clean water is sufficient in most cases, and a disinfectant is reserved for use following a root disease outbreak.
