Biostimulant against cold stress
Vitalink's Heat is a biostimulant designed for cold periods, when the temperature drops below 5 °C. It helps plants keep growing and flowering despite the cold, at 0.3 to 0.5 ml per litre as a watering or at 5 ml per litre as a spray.
The summary
- Threshold for use: a biostimulant that helps plants withstand temperatures below 5 °C.
- Watering: 0.3 to 0.5 ml per litre of water, at the base of the plants.
- Spraying: 5 ml per litre, without going as far as run-off.
- Aquaponic greenhouse: for potted crops in the greenhouse, never in the fish water or above the grow beds.
Helping crops in an unheated greenhouse or on a balcony through winter nights
Heat by Vitalink is a liquid biostimulant that helps plants grow and flower below 5 °C. It is dosed at 0.3 to 0.5 ml per litre for watering or 5 ml per litre for spraying, in a 250 ml bottle. It complements a winter protection fleece and is used on pots in the greenhouse, never in the fish water.
Below 5 °C, most vegetables slow down sharply: growth stops, flowers abort, and a single night of frost can ruin weeks of work. Heat is a biostimulant developed for these cold spells. It works by encouraging the plant to produce growth hormones, which helps it keep developing and flowering when the temperature drops, in an unheated greenhouse, under a polytunnel or on an exposed balcony.
❄️ Two ways to use it
At the base
0.3 to 0.5 ml per litre of watering water, poured onto the grow medium.
On the foliage
5 ml per litre as a fine spray, without going as far as run-off.
Apply it before and during forecast cold spells, as a watering or a spray depending on your installation. The watering dose is very small, so a graduated syringe or a pipette helps you measure it accurately: 3 to 5 ml is enough for a 10-litre watering can. A thermo-hygrometer placed in the greenhouse tells you when nights fall below 5 °C. Heat does not replace physical protection: a fleece, good insulation and, if needed, a little extra warmth remain the first line of defence against hard frosts.
Spray until the liquid runs off
Spray finely, without soaking the foliage. Stick to the dose of 5 ml per litre for foliar feeding, and 0.3 to 0.5 ml per litre when watering.
🌱 In the aquaponic greenhouse
An unheated aquaponic greenhouse goes through exactly these cold nights, and they affect the whole system at once. The bacteria in the filter work best between 22 and 29 °C, lettuce grows well between 18 and 26 °C, and an aquaponic system is generally run between 18 and 30 °C. Heat acts on the plants, not on the water: it is no substitute for insulating the tanks, nor for choosing fish and crops suited to cold water. It must never be poured into the fish water, and a spray over the tanks would end up partly in the solution that circulates; it is therefore intended for potted or soil-grown crops in the greenhouse, autumn seedlings and balcony plants.
For the water itself, a pond de-icer heater keeps an opening free of ice on an outdoor pond without heating all of the water, which lets gases exchange during frosty nights. The article heating your greenhouse in winter covers insulation and frost protection for the shelter, and the guide protecting your aquaponic system in winter deals with the pond and the fish. Winter lamb's lettuce, spinach and lettuces sown in autumn then benefit both from a well-sealed shelter and from a supply of Heat in their pots.
☀️ The summer version and volumes
The same range includes Chill, designed for spells when the temperature rises above 30 °C, with the same watering and spraying doses: the two bottles take turns from one season to the next in a greenhouse exposed to extremes. The 250 ml bottle of Heat makes up 500 to 830 litres of watering solution at 0.3 to 0.5 ml per litre, or 50 litres of spray solution at 5 ml per litre. A single bottle will therefore last you several winters on a few seedling trays, whereas a greenhouse with several dozen pots uses more, especially if you spray the foliage.
