The summary

  • What it does: keeps an opening in the ice around the float.
  • Which pond it suits: about 5 m² of surface area, down to -20 °C outside.
  • How it works: a float and a 200 W stainless steel element, running as soon as it is plugged in.
  • Connection: an outdoor socket protected by a 30 mA RCD, with 10 m of cable.
  • How much effort: a quick look once a week in winter, a clean at the end of the season.
  • How it arrives: in one compact parcel, with the element and float to be assembled.

200 W floating de-icer that keeps an opening in the ice on the pond

The EHEIM thermo200 floats on the surface of the pond and keeps an opening in the ice all winter, down to -20 °C outside, for a pond with a surface area of about 5 m².

❄️ A window in the ice

The unit consists of an anthracite grey float and a stainless steel heating element, which hangs beneath it in the water. Its 200 W warms the small volume of water around the element, so ice does not form around the float, while the rest of the pond freezes over normally at the surface. You therefore get a window open to the air, and not a heated pond: 200 W is not enough to raise the temperature of a pond exposed to the cold. The stainless steel element is unbreakable, which matters for a unit that spends several months in cold, dirty water.

This opening has a specific purpose. Under continuous ice, the organic matter on the bottom keeps decomposing: it consumes dissolved oxygen and releases gases which, with no way out, build up in the water. An ice-free area restores the exchange with the air, so that these gases escape and oxygen enters again. Your fish, sluggish on the bottom, and the micro-organisms in the pond, thus spend the winter in water that stays oxygenated. Never break the ice with a tool to make this opening, because the shock wave travels through the water and injures fish that cannot swim away.

🔌 Connection and safety

The unit plugs into an outdoor socket protected by a residual current device of 30 mA at most, like any electrical appliance used at a pond. It is rated IPX8, meaning it is protected against continuous immersion, and its 10 m cable lets you place it well away from the edge. Form a loop in the cable lower than the socket, so that any water running down the lead drops to the ground instead of reaching the socket. The unit heats as soon as it is plugged in, with no thermostat, and cannot be connected to a timer or a remote control. If the element ends up out of the water, a thermal cut-out switches it off, and it only resets an hour after being unplugged.

A floating thermometer to manage overwintering

A floating thermometer can be read from the edge without handling anything, and its reading tells you when to switch to a cold-season food, since fish can no longer digest the same formulas once the water cools. You then manage overwintering by the actual water temperature rather than by the calendar.

Unplug and wait 30 minutes before taking it out

Do not touch the heating element while it is running or just after. To remove the unit, unplug it first, then leave it to cool for at least 30 minutes in the pond water. Never use the unit out of the water, and do not plug it in if its cable is damaged: repair is then a matter for an EHEIM after-sales service.

📍 Installation

Install the unit before the first frosts, while the pond is still free of ice. Insert the heating element into the float and turn it clockwise until it clicks, then place it on the water directly above the deepest part of the pond, somewhere visible from the edge. If ice has already formed, do not break it: melt an opening with hot water, then place the unit in that gap. A spot sheltered from the prevailing winds also helps it keep its opening, since wind cools the surface of the water more quickly.

The surface of the pond

The unit suits a pond with a surface area of about 5 m².

The cold in your region

The opening stays working down to an outside temperature of -20 °C.

Exposure to wind

A pond swept by the wind loses its heat faster than a sheltered pond.

The depth

A deep pond keeps a layer of more temperate water at the bottom, where the fish stay.

🌱 In aquaponics

In an outdoor aquaponic system, the opening in the ice also protects the biofilter bacteria, which slow down markedly in the cold but must survive until spring. Water that stays oxygenated keeps its bacterial colony, which resumes activity as soon as the weather warms, whereas water deprived of oxygen for weeks may force you to redo the whole nitrogen cycle. The guide to preparing your system in autumn details the adjustments to make before the first frosts.

⚡ Consumption and the end of winter

Without a thermostat, the unit draws its 200 W continuously for as long as it is plugged in, which is 4.8 kWh per day and about 144 kWh over 30 days of frost. You therefore save by plugging it in when frosts are forecast and unplugging it when the weather turns mild again, relying on the forecasts and the thermometer rather than the calendar. As it cannot be connected to a timer, switching it on is done by hand, and it only requires checking that the unit is floating properly in the water at the moment you plug it in.

At the end of winter, unplug the unit, leave it to cool for 30 minutes in the water, then take it out and clean it under running water with a soft brush, with no hard object or harsh product. Then store it somewhere dry, after checking the cable along its whole length. Also note down the dates you plugged it in and unplugged it over the past winter: they give the actual running time, and so the season's consumption at your electricity tariff, and help you plan for the next winter. The unit comes with a 3-year guarantee.
