Floating insect-protein sticks for ornamental fish from 3 to 10 cm
These sticks are formulated for ornamental aquarium fish between three and ten centimetres in length. They contain 42% protein, 6% fat, and 3% crude fibre, and the first ingredient declared on the label is an insect protein derived from the black soldier fly. The stick floats rather than sinking to the bottom, giving you full control over the quantity actually consumed.
🦗 Where the protein comes from
Insect protein heads the ingredient list, ahead of wheat flour and shrimp meal. It does not stand alone there, as the recipe also declares salmon meal and squid meal, so this stick does not replace a seafood-free food. What changes is the position insect protein occupies in the list, and the resulting protein level. At 42%, it sits at the top of the range, well ahead of the 36% found in the fine granule food for guppies, and your filter will notice the difference accordingly.

At 42% protein, this stick delivers more nitrogen per serving than a standard food at 36%.
What your plants receive
The nitrates produced from this nitrogen are what your plants feed on. A richer ration requires a greater growing surface.
What to measure
Run an ammonium test after every feed increase, and a nitrite test for as long as the filter is still maturing.
🌊 A stick that stays on the surface
A floating food lets you monitor feeding visually. Offer an amount your fish finish within a few minutes, once or twice a day, then remove whatever is still floating. You can see who is coming to feed and you can see when they have had enough, something no percentage figure can replace. For growing fish, increase to three or four feeds a day, always in small amounts, and remember that overfeeding remains the most common mistake, as our article on common aquaponics errors explains.
Three ways to accidentally overload the water
Do not increase the ration because your fish are still begging, a feed with 42% protein loads the water more quickly than a standard feed. Do not keep the tin for more than four months after opening, as the vitamins degrade. And do not change both feed and quantity on the same day, otherwise you will not know which of the two caused a shift in your ammonium test.
Switching from one food to another without trouble
Switching food should be done over the course of a week, mixing the two in proportions that gradually reverse, failing this, some fish will refuse to eat for several days while others overindulge. Keep your old container until the transition is complete rather than finishing it all at once. And use that week to take an ammonium test every other day, since this is precisely the period when a richer formula shows up in the water before it shows up in the fish.
🐠 Suitable fish
The stick format is aimed at fish between three and ten centimetres that feed at the surface or mid-water, which covers the vast majority of a community tank, from barbs to platys and danios. It is not suited to bottom-dwellers, which will not come up to retrieve it, nor to very small species whose mouths cannot take it on. A stick can, however, be broken between two fingers for smaller fish, and many hobbyists do exactly that rather than buying two separate tins. For a tank with corydoras or loaches on the bottom, a weighted tablet remains the logical complement to keep alongside this one.
