Bactrex is a soluble powder from Biotabs that combines Bacillus bacteria, Trichoderma fungi and actinomycetes. Diluted at one teaspoon per litre, it is watered onto emerged seedlings and rooted cuttings to populate their growing medium with micro-organisms that colonise the roots and the grow medium.
The summary
- Organisms supplied: six Bacillus strains, Trichoderma and actinomycetes, in soluble powder form.
- Dilution: one level teaspoon per litre of water, for 50 plants.
- At the right stage: just after sowing, transplanting or the rooting of a cutting.
- Where fish are concerned: in the nursery, on plants in compost or coir, never in the tank.
Beneficial micro-organisms to water onto seedlings and young cuttings
Biotabs' Bactrex, a soluble powder of Bacillus, Trichoderma and actinomycetes, populates the roots of seedlings and cuttings with micro-organisms. One teaspoon per litre waters 50 plants, alone or with Orgatrex, within 6 hours. 50 g sachet for 50 litres, 250 g and 1 kg tubs, never in pond water.
A seedling that has just emerged or a freshly rooted cutting is living in compost or coconut fibre that is still almost devoid of microbial life. Bactrex supplies micro-organisms that colonise the roots and the grow medium from the very first days. Water it in at the base of your young plants from sowing, transplanting or rooting, whether in compost, coconut fibre or open ground.
The powder combines six strains of Bacillus bacteria, Trichoderma fungi and actinomycetes, those filamentous bacteria that give a living soil its woodland smell. These organisms are carried by a soluble yucca extract and a little humic acid, which help them disperse in the watering water. It is an organic fertiliser rich in soil bacteria, certified 100% organic. As long as the powder stays dry, these organisms are dormant, and the watering water wakes them up.
🦠 Roots colonised from the very start
Trichoderma are fungi that quickly colonise the surface of the roots and settle there, while the bacteria break down the organic matter in the growing medium and make it available to the plant. This is why the product is used at the very start of cultivation, on potting compost or coco fibre that is still fresh: the beneficial organisms find the space free and become established at the same time as the roots. Seedling losses are most often due to too much water and too little air around the stem base, and their causes are detailed in the article on germination failures.
🌱 In aquaponics, at the nursery
Bactrex is not poured into the fish circuit: it is made for an organic medium, compost or coco fibre, whereas the biofilter of a system already hosts its own nitrifying bacteria, on which water quality depends. It is used upstream, in your nursery. Lettuce, basil or tomato plants raised in compost blocks or coco pots, and cuttings rooted before they enter the grow beds, receive one watering with it at the start of their rearing, when their roots are forming. Before placing a plant in a raft or a channel, shake and rinse its root ball over a bucket, so that the inoculated compost stays out of the system. The article setting up your indoor seedling area describes this nursery.
Coco plugs for inoculating cuttings
Coco fibre cutting plugs give Bactrex the organic support its micro-organisms need, in a format that then goes as it is into a net pot. Soak the plugs in the solution before inserting your mint or basil cuttings: the Trichoderma colonise the fibre at the same time as the first roots. The plug keeps its shape once rooted, which makes the move from nursery to system easier without damaging the roots.
A living solution to use within 6 hours
Once dissolved, the organisms wear out: prepare only the amount needed for the day and water within 6 hours. Do not use more than the stated dose, as an excess brings no benefit. Avoid any fungicide or disinfectant on the same growing medium, as it would destroy the organisms applied, and keep the sachet or tub tightly closed, in a cool, dry place.
🧪 Preparing and watering
Dissolve
One level teaspoon, or 1 g, in one litre of water.
Water
One litre of solution waters 50 seedlings or cuttings, at the roots.
No waiting
The solution is alive and should be used within 6 hours.
The planting watering solution can combine 1 g of Bactrex and 5 ml of Orgatrex liquid organic fertiliser per litre of tap water, or 1 g of Bactrex and 20 ml of Orgatrex in 500 ml of water, poured all at once at the base of a plant. Bactrex can also be used on its own, at the same dose, when you feed your plants another way. Water just after sowing or transplanting, at the base, so that the solution reaches the zone where the roots will spread. A further application is possible later, if the plants stall, and at each repotting into fresh medium. On a reused compost that has been re-amended with Startrex organic soil amendment, you dip the pot in the solution, then water very little during the first week.
The choice of size depends on the number of seedlings. At 1 g per litre and 50 seedlings per litre, the 50 g sachet makes 50 litres of solution, enough to water around 2,500 seedlings or cuttings. The 250 g and 1 kg sizes suit a gardener who sows all year round or a plant nursery. As the product keeps dry, you can open the tub for each batch of seedlings, measure out a level spoonful and close it again straight away, with no loss for the following season.
