Fitting kit for flood table and flood-and-drain bed
This kit brings together the two bottom fittings for a flood-and-drain system: an overflow, which sets the water level, and a fill-and-drain fitting through which water enters and exits. Each one is topped with a strainer to hold back the grow medium.
It fits the Ebb&Grow flood table, but also a grow bed, a clay pebble media bed in an aquaponics system, or a home-built seedling table.
The summary
- What you receive: two black polypropylene fittings — an overflow and a fill/drain fitting — each with its own strainer.
- The principle: the pump fills the grow bed, the overflow sets the water level, then the water drains away by gravity.
- Uses: flood-and-drain table, aquaponic grow bed, floodable seedling or cutting tray.
- What you'll need: a drilled grow bed, a submersible pump and a timer, not included.
Overflow and strainer inlet fitting for flood tables, aquaponic grow beds and flood-and-drain systems
Every flood and drain system, also known as ebb and flow, is built on the same principle: a grow bed positioned above a water reservoir, two fittings passing through its base, and a pump controlled by a timer. This kit provides those two fittings. It is fitted as standard on the Ebb&Grow flood table, but its dimensions match the fittings found on most flood tables on the market, so you can install it on any rigid grow bed that you drill yourself.
🌊 The flood and drain principle
The cycle always follows the same sequence. The pump sends water into the tray through the inlet fitting, and the level rises around the roots until it reaches the top of the overflow, through which any excess drains back to the reservoir. When the pump stops, the water drains back by gravity through the inlet fitting, and air enters the grow medium as the level drops. The roots thus receive water and oxygen in alternation, with no valves or moving parts inside the tray.
🔩 Two fittings, two roles
The short fitting is used for filling and draining: it passes through the bottom of the tank and receives, from below, the pipe coming from your pump. The long fitting, approximately 17 cm, is the overflow: its body, formed from two interlocking sections, protrudes into the tank, and its height determines the maximum water level. If the timer gets stuck in the on position, excess water returns through it to the sump instead of spilling over. Each fitting consists of a threaded body, a lock nut, a barbed connector and a slotted strainer, all in black polypropylene, opaque to light.
Fill the bed with a fast-draining grow medium
Flood and drain works well only if water leaves the grow medium quickly. Clay pebbles of 8 to 20 mm drain almost instantly, allow air to fill the entire bed after each drain cycle, and can be cleaned between crops. The strainers included in the kit retain them in the grow bed, so no pebble enters the pipe or reaches the pump.
Drill and tighten without damaging the tank
Drill the base with a hole saw at the diameter of the threaded body, in a flat area well away from the edges, then deburr the hole so that the nut sits flush. Tighten the nut by hand, without tools, as overtightening can crack the thread. Fill the tank with clean water and check for leaks before any use with plants or fish.
Flood table
The kit replaces the fittings on the Ebb&Grow table, or fits a flood tray from another brand of the same format.
Aquaponic grow bed
It turns a bed of clay pebbles into a flood-and-drain system, fed from the fish pond.
Seedling tray
It sits in a shallow tray where seedling trays and cuttings receive water from below.
In each of these setups, the kit plays the same role, with only the size of the tank and pump varying. The water level is set by the height of the overflow, the flood duration by the timer, and the cycle frequency by the grow medium: with clay pebbles, allow 4 to 6 floods per day, and 2 to 4 with a water-retaining grow medium such as coco fibre. Adjust these settings by observing your roots during the first week.
🐟 In aquaponics
A flood-and-drain grow bed is one of the most widely used setups in aquaponics. The pump, sitting in your pond, sends the fish water up to a grow bed filled with clay pebbles placed above, and the water then returns to the pond by gravity. The bed serves a dual purpose: it supports the plants and acts as a biofilter, since the bacteria colonising the clay pebbles convert the fish's ammonia into nitrates, and each drain cycle brings them the oxygen they need.
Two precautions apply when fish are involved. The volume of water that fills the grow bed is drawn from the pond with each flood cycle: size the bed so that the drop in water level remains moderate and never exposes the pump strainer. Many aquaponic systems also use a bell siphon with a continuously running pump; this kit is designed for the timer-controlled variant, which is simpler to set up, where the pump switching off triggers the drain.
🧽 Strainer maintenance
Fine roots and particles of grow medium accumulate around the fittings, especially in aquaponics, where fish waste loads the water with organic matter. A clogged strainer slows drainage, leaving roots submerged for longer than intended. At every nutrient solution change or pond clean, remove the strainers, rinse them under clean water, then refit them before restarting the pump. The kit weighs 88 g, measures 17 x 7.5 x 4 cm, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
