This rectangular high-density polyethylene pot is the building block of a grow medium-based growing setup. It comes in four volumes, from 45 to 80 L, with thick walls that handle the weight of water-saturated clay pebbles, two reinforced handles for moving it when full, and a moulded graduation so you never have to guess the water level.
⚫ Black against algae
The colour serves a purpose: it prevents light from reaching the roots and the water. A translucent tank lets through enough light for algae to establish themselves in the grow medium, turn the base of your plants green, and compete with your crops for nutrients. Black eliminates this problem by design, with no effort on your part. HDPE, meanwhile, withstands impacts, UV exposure, and prolonged contact with a nutrient solution without degrading, making it a container that lasts several seasons rather than just one.
💧 Its place in a system
In aquaponics, this tank is where everything comes together: the clay pebbles support the roots while simultaneously housing the bacteria that convert fish waste into nitrates. Fill it with 4–8 mm clay pebbles, plant up, then connect it to your circuit. The plastic can be cleanly drilled with a hole saw to fit an inlet or outlet. What to plan for alongside the tank
A grow bed on its own does not make a complete growing setup. Factor in the volume of clay pebbles required, slightly less than the bed volume, since you always leave a few centimetres of clearance at the top, and plan your inlet and outlet fittings accordingly. A coco mat placed at the bottom holds back fine particles that would otherwise end up in the pump strainer, and it is a precaution best taken during assembly rather than after the fact.
The load-bearing weight is not that of the tank
An 80-litre bed filled with clay pebbles and saturated with water weighs close to 80 kg, and it is this mass that determines the supporting structure. The handles are for moving an empty or barely damp bed, never a bed in active use. Size your support before filling, on a basis of 1 kg per litre of volume, and rest the bed on its entire base rather than on two cross members, a plastic base will flex and eventually crack at any point of overhang.
📐 Choosing the volume
Choose a planter based on what you intend to grow in it, not on the space available. Lettuces and herbs do well in the 45 L, whereas a tomato or strawberry plant, whose roots reach deeper, will be far more comfortable in the 60 or 80 L. When in doubt, go for the larger volume: an oversized planter filled halfway causes no harm, whereas one that is too small will restrict your plants for the entire season. The principles of soilless growing do not remove the need to give roots adequate space.
🔩 Drilling and fitting
HDPE is best drilled with a hole saw or punch, at low speed and without forcing, as the material melts if the tool overheats. Always drill on a flat wall, never on a radius or a rib, and leave at least two centimetres between the edge of the hole and the corner of the tub. The fitting is then made with a flat-seal bulkhead connector tightened by hand, an O-ring will not hold on a wall that flexes. Always test for leaks with plain water, with the tub placed on dry ground, before adding a single litre of media, because redoing a seal under 60 kg of grow medium is a very different job.
