Sicce Mega Filtra external aquarium filter, up to 950 L
This external filter for freshwater or marine aquariums comes supplied with its media, for mechanical, biological and chemical filtration. Depending on the version, it circulates between 1,450 and 2,150 L/h and treats a tank of up to 650 or 950 litres.
The summary
- What you receive: an external filter supplied with its media, ready to filter the same day.
- For which tank: up to 650 L for the 650 version, up to 950 L for the 950 SDC version.
- What the SDC version adds: a flow rate adjustable over Wi-Fi and 3 m of maximum head height.
- Maintenance: the pre-filter is rinsed separately, the carbon is replaced, the ceramics are kept.
- How to choose: the volume of media and the number of stages set the versions apart.
- What it consumes: from 24 to 32 W in continuous running depending on the version chosen.
Supplied filled with media, for freshwater or marine aquariums up to 950 litres
This external filter comes pre-filled. The tank already contains its foams, carbon, zeolite, filter wool and ceramic media, so you connect it, prime it and it filters from the very same day. Depending on the version, it handles a tank of up to 650 or 950 litres and circulates from 1,450 to 2,150 litres per hour, in freshwater and seawater alike.
🧱 The filtration stages
In the tank, the water first meets a pre-filter foam housed under the head, then side foams and a stack of baskets. Each basket holds a different medium: Biofoam foam, Aquamat wadding for fine filtration, Hyperzeo zeolite, Hypercarbo activated carbon and Bioker porous ceramics. This stack brings together in a single unit the three functions of a filter, mechanical, chemical and biological, which differ in what they retain and in how they are maintained.
The pre-filter
It catches the large particles ahead of the main media and can be rinsed without touching the rest.
Mechanical filtration
Foams of increasing density catch the debris first, then the fine particles.
Chemical filtration
Activated carbon and zeolite bind the dissolved compounds that colour and burden the water.
Biological filtration
The ceramic media provide the surface on which the nitrifying bacteria settle.
The 650 version has 10 filtration stages and 3 baskets, the 950 SDC version 13 stages and 4 baskets. The volume of media thus goes from 6.8 to 9.5 litres, the tank from 10 to 13 litres and the mechanical filtration surface from 850 to 1,250 cm². On a heavily stocked tank, this reserve of volume determines how many weeks you can go between two openings. Power follows the same step up, from 24 to 32 watts, and the delivery head goes from 1.9 to 3 metres, which matters as soon as the water return has to clear a tall piece of furniture.
Take a planted 400-litre aquarium: the 650 version turns over at most about 3.6 times the tank volume per hour, and its range stops at 650 litres. For an 800-litre tank, only the 950 SDC version falls within its range, and its 2,150 litres per hour represent about 2.7 times the volume. Its adjustable flow also lets you soften the current above delicate plants, without changing the outlet pipe.
The carbon can be replaced, the ceramics cannot
Plan from the outset for what you need to renew the chemical part, because it is the only part that really wears out. Activated carbon for filters should be replaced when the water takes on an amber tint, and it is sold by the litre, so measured to the size of your basket. The ceramic media, on the other hand, are never replaced: they are rinsed in tank water and put back in place, since it is the bacteria they carry that purify the water.
New carbon also removes treatments
An activated carbon basket binds dissolved organic molecules, without distinguishing between what dirties the water and what you have deliberately added to it. If you are starting a course of treatment on your fish, remove the carbon from the filter for the whole duration of the course, then put it back at the end of the course to remove any residues. A treatment run with the carbon in place gives the impression of an ineffective product when in fact the filter has absorbed it.
The set of media supplied covers these three functions as soon as you open the box: foams, activated carbon, zeolite, ceramics and a finishing floss. Setting up therefore requires no additional purchase, and the first replacement only comes after several months, when the carbon is saturated. You then keep control of the composition, since the baskets accept biological filtration balls just as well as ceramic pre-filtration noodles sold by the litre.
📡 Controlling the SDC model
The 950 SDC version stands out with an adjustable-flow motor, controlled via Wi-Fi from the CONTRALL app. You change the flow from there without touching a valve, for example to calm the current while feeding or to increase it when the tank is heavily loaded. Its head height also reaches 3 metres, compared with 1.9 metres on the 650 version. This height matters as soon as the tank is placed on the floor and the grow bed sits on a tall piece of furniture, or when part of the circuit returns water to a grow bed placed above.
🌿 The filter and the plants
In a system where crops live off the fish water, the stages are not equal. The biological stage produces the nitrate that the roots feed on, and it needs to be developed. The chemical stage does the opposite: carbon and zeolite retain dissolved compounds, and zeolite notably fixes ammonium, which is the raw material of nitrification. In an aquaponic circuit, therefore, replace the zeolite with additional biological media and keep the carbon for the end of treatment courses, when the aim is precisely to remove the product from the water. The pre-filter remains useful in every case, since it removes particles without retaining anything dissolved. The article on the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics explains in detail what the bacteria on the ceramics do.
On a 600-litre aquarium connected to a grow bed, the 650 version is sufficient in terms of volume, and its head height of 1.9 metres allows the return to be sent to a bed placed 60 centimetres above the surface, from where the water comes back by gravity. Then fill with Bioker ceramics the basket that used to hold the zeolite, and keep the carbon out of the circuit until the next course of treatment. The guide to building your own aquaponic system explains this set-up in detail.
🚰 Connection and space required
The 650 version measures 26 centimetres by 26.5 and is 41.1 high, while the 950 SDC is 49.5 centimetres high on the same footprint. Both connect with 18 millimetre internal-diameter pipe, and their power cable is 2.2 metres long. This cable length often decides the positioning: a socket more than 2 metres from the cabinet calls for an extension lead, which should be fixed high up, away from splashes. Measure the free height under the aquarium, then add the clearance needed to open the head, otherwise every maintenance session will begin by taking the tank out. You can also place the tank next to the cabinet, as long as it remains below the water level of the aquarium.
🧽 Maintenance over the months
The pre-filter is the only part that needs rinsing often, as soon as the return flow visibly weakens. Switch off the power, close the fittings, take out its basket and squeeze the foam in a bucket of water taken from the aquarium, before refilling the canister using the quick priming function. The other baskets are opened less often: the carbon is changed when the water takes on a tint again, the zeolite once it has bound all it can, while the Bioker ceramics are rinsed and never replaced. Rinse only part of the biological media at a time, to preserve the bacterial colony.
