3 mm pellet for goldfish and young koi, from 5 to 15 cm

These floating pellets measure 3 mm and come in one size only. They are suited to small ornamental fish in a garden pond: goldfish, fantails, young koi carp, and other cyprinids between five and fifteen centimetres. A pellet of this size can be taken in the mouth once a fish reaches 5 cm, and remains appropriate up to around fifteen centimetres. Beyond that, an adult will swallow it whole without chewing, leading to repeated feeding passes, whereas the 4–5 mm size of the all-seasons floating food is then a better match.

🥄 The five-minute meal

Feed the amount your fish consume in five minutes, two to four times a day depending on water temperature, then skim off anything still floating with a net. Several small feeds are better than one large one, because cyprinids have no true stomach and digest continuously. The pellet remains visible on the surface throughout feeding, so you can see who is eating and adjust the next day's ration accordingly. Feed as long as the water stays between 9 and 25 °C, measured in the water itself rather than the air. When it drops consistently below 10 °C, appetite falls away and the cold-water floating feed takes over.

🌿 The ration in aquaponics

Whatever you feed your fish eventually ends up back in the water. A floating thermometer read in the morning gives you this figure, and a precision scale or a simple measuring jug helps you weigh the first meal rather than estimate it. Spring is when mistakes happen

After winter, your fish will be demanding food eagerly while the biological filtration has not yet rebuilt its bacterial population. A normal ration given at this point therefore loads water that is not yet able to process it, and this is the most common cause of a pond turning green in April. Start with a single small feed, wait until a water test comes back clean, then increase gradually over two to three weeks. A bag opened the previous year is better discarded than used at this stage, as the oils oxidise on contact with air.

Is this 3 mm pellet suitable for my goldfish?

How much to feed per day?

The rule that takes precedence is the feeding rule. Give what is eaten within five minutes, two to four times a day depending on water temperature. With a floating pellet, this can be judged by eye, which no percentage figure allows.

The percentage is useful for sizing a purchase. Allow 1.5 to 2% of body weight per day for adult fish in warm water. A one-year-old specimen may reach 5%, while a three-year-old drops back towards 2%. For a pond with a few kilograms of fish, the 3.5 L bag will cover several weeks during the warmer months.

From what water temperature can it be fed?

A floating pellet takes up a great deal of space for very little mass, which explains the difference compared with a sinking food sold by the kilo. When sizing a purchase, think in kilograms, since rations are calculated on the live weight of your fish.

My fish are growing: when should I move up to the next size?

Watch which fish come to feed. As long as the majority of your fish remain under around fifteen centimetres, the 3 mm pellet is the right size.
Once the larger individuals exceed this size, they swallow the pellet whole without chewing and make multiple passes at each feeding.
Finish the current bag before opening another size, as an opened pellet oxidises.
Then switch to the 4–5 mm size of the all-seasons floating food.
If young fish are born in spring, keep a bag of 3 mm alongside for them.
