The summary

  • Which size: 250 ml or 1 L, depending on the number of aquariums you feed.
  • Its composition: 48% protein, beta-glucan and stabilised vitamin C.
  • How it behaves: it sinks slowly, from mid-water down to the bottom.
  • Who it is for: omnivores living in the middle and bottom of the tank, gouramis, angelfish, loaches.

Thin slow-sinking flakes, for omnivores in the mid-water and at the bottom

Between the flake, which stays at the surface, and the pellet, which drops straight to the bottom, the chip has a place of its own. It is a thin wafer, thicker than a flake, that sinks slowly: mid-water fish snap it up as it descends, and the pieces that reach the floor feed the bottom-dwellers. Tropical Supervit Chips use this format for a complete staple diet, intended for omnivores that feed in mid-water and on the bottom of your aquarium.

🐠 The mid-water fish

If your fish are reluctant to come up to the surface, the chips are a good choice. Gouramis, angelfish and many South American cichlids happily feed at mid-depth, where a slowly sinking chip catches their attention, while catfish and loaches make the most of those that reach the bottom. Ancistrus, which have a downward-facing mouth, rasp at a chip lying flat like a small tablet. For small fish and juveniles, crumble the chips between your fingers over the water: you get fragments of the right size without changing the food. With greedy fish, add them in 2 or 3 stages so that the shyer ones get some too.

🧪 What a chip contains

The analysis shows 48% protein, 8% fat, 3% fibre and 10% moisture. The recipe provides beta-glucan, a yeast compound that stimulates natural defences, stabilised vitamin C and zeolite, a mineral that aids digestion. The chips hold their shape in water instead of breaking down at once, which limits the food dust that would cloud your tank. Like any dry food, they lose some of their vitamins on contact with damp air: close the tub tightly and keep it somewhere dry.

Test strips to monitor nitrite and nitrate

A tank fed twice a day is best tested every week, since the ration ends up in the water in the form of nitrogen. A JBL ProAquaTest Easy 7 in 1 test strip, dipped for 3 seconds, gives you nitrite, nitrate, pH, KH, GH and chlorine in 1 minute. You can then see whether your ration is still within what the biological filtration can handle, before the water turns cloudy.

🍽️ The right amount

You give small amounts several times a day, usually 2 to 3 feeds, of what your fish will eat within a few minutes. In a 200-litre aquarium stocked with gouramis, barbs and plecos, 2 feeds of a pinch each are enough: the top fish catch the chips as they sink, and the plecos make the most of those that reach the bottom. If any chips are left on the substrate after a few minutes, reduce the next portion. In a densely planted tank, feed in a clear area at the front of the tank. The 250 ml tub suits a medium-sized aquarium, while the 1 L tub is for large tanks and for anyone feeding several aquariums. In a small indoor aquaponic system, this ration becomes, through the nitrogen cycle, the fertiliser that feeds the plants, and the guide to getting an aquaponic system off to a good start explains how to increase it as the filter matures.
