This liquid mineral growth fertiliser, NPK 5-0-5 with calcium and chelated trace elements, forms the first half of a two-bottle fertiliser: it is always used alongside its flowering counterpart, from seedling to harvest. It comes in a soft-water version and a hard-water version, which differ mainly in their calcium content.
It is dosed at 0.5 to 3 ml per litre in hydroponics.
The summary
- What you receive: a 500 ml or 1 L bottle, or a 5 or 10 L container, in soft-water or hard-water formulation.
- How it works: it is used alongside the bloom part of the same fertiliser, in proportions that change with the growth stage.
- The formulation: soft water below 70 mg of calcium per litre, hard water above that.
- Safety: the concentrate causes serious eye damage — wear safety glasses.
Growth part of a two-bottle mineral fertiliser, available in soft water or hard water version
A two-part fertiliser separates into two bottles elements that would precipitate if concentrated together, particularly calcium and sulphates. This part contains no phosphorus: it supplies nitrogen, 60 to 70% of which is in nitrate form depending on the version, along with potassium, calcium and trace elements, whilst the bloom part NPK 1-6-4 provides phosphorus, magnesium and sulphur. You always use both together, adjusting their ratio according to your plants' growth stage.
💧 Soft water or hard water
Both versions share the same formula, NPK 5-0-5, but the soft-water version contains 3.4% calcium oxide and the hard-water version only 1%. Hard tap water already supplies a good share of the calcium needed, and the hard-water version avoids adding too much, which would block the uptake of magnesium and potassium. The threshold is 70 mg of calcium per litre, equivalent to roughly 17.5 French degrees of calcium hardness, a figure shown on your local authority's water quality report.
Choose the dedicated version for a coco coir grow medium
Coco fibre holds back some of the calcium and magnesium from the solution, which causes deficiencies in young leaves when using a standard hydroponic fertiliser. For growing on coco fibre, there is a version of this fertiliser formulated for coco fibre, NPK 4-0-5 with 5% calcium, which follows its own application schedule at similar doses. You then follow the same programme, adapted to the grow medium.
First roots
0.5 ml of grow and 0.5 ml of bloom per litre.
Full growth
3 ml of grow fertiliser to 1 ml of bloom per litre.
Flowering
1.5 ml of grow to 3 ml of bloom per litre.
Wear safety goggles when pouring the concentrate
Both versions are classified as hazardous: the concentrate causes serious eye damage. Always wear goggles when handling it, rinse immediately with water if splashed, and never mix the two neat solutions together, always add one then the other to the reservoir water. Store tightly closed, in a cool place and out of reach of children.
🌱 Preparing the reservoir
First pour the growth dose into the water, mix, then add the flowering part. For a 30-litre reservoir in full growth, that means 90 ml of this bottle and 30 ml of the flowering part, targeting a conductivity of 1.3 to 1.8 mS. Then measure the pH with a pH drop test kit and bring it to between 5.5 and 6.5. In soil, doses are lower, up to 2.5 ml per litre of this bottle.
📦 Four formats
At 3 ml per litre, the highest dose in the programme, the 500 ml bottle makes up around 165 litres of solution, the 1 L bottle around 330 litres, the 5 L container over 1,600 litres, and the 10 L container over 3,300 litres. Its dose exceeds that of the flowering part up to the pre-flowering stage, then drops to 1.5 ml during flowering: in a predominantly vegetative crop, it is therefore the first to be used up. The fertiliser complies with regulation (EU) 2019/1009, is manufactured in France, and keeps for 5 years after opening.
