Mineral fertiliser for tomatoes, peppers and strawberries, to be used with TriPart Micro
PermaBloom is a liquid mineral fertiliser with an NPK 1-2-5 formula, designed for plants that flower and bear fruit for months without a break: tomato, pepper, chilli, cucumber, bean, melon or strawberry. It is used with just one other bottle, TriPart Micro, giving you a complete two-part nutrient solution instead of three. It is the former FloraMato, whose label changed along with the brand name.
🍅 A formula for continuous harvests
A tomato or a pepper never moves cleanly from growth to flowering: the stem keeps lengthening while the first trusses ripen, and the plant needs nitrogen for its leaves and potassium for its fruit at the same time. With a three-part system, you adjust this ratio by varying two bottles. PermaBloom fixes it once and for all, with 5% potassium to 2% phosphorus and a little nitrogen, which explains why its dose stays at 2 ml per litre from full growth through to flowering.
First roots
You add 0.4 ml of PermaBloom and 0.4 ml of Micro per litre, for a conductivity of 0.3 to 0.6 mS.
Full growth
The dose rises to 2 ml of PermaBloom and 3 ml of Micro per litre, and the conductivity reaches 1.7 to 2 mS.
Flowering
Growth doses stay the same, 2 ml and 3 ml per litre, after a pre-flowering stage at 2 ml of each part.
Fruit ripening
PermaBloom goes up to 2.5 ml and the Micro to 3.5 ml per litre, for a conductivity of 2.1 to 2.6 mS.
💧 Preparing the nutrient solution
Shake each bottle before dosing, then add the two parts one after the other to the reservoir water, stirring in between and rinsing the measure. For a 50-litre reservoir in flowering, that means 100 ml of PermaBloom and 150 ml of Micro. Never exceed 3 ml of PermaBloom per litre, and dilute further for seedlings or a soil crop, for which the chart allows up to 25% less depending on the stage. Then measure the conductivity, which tells you whether the solution is at the right strength.
The two concentrates are poured into the water separately
Never mix PermaBloom and TriPart Micro undiluted, whether in a measuring cup or in a small volume of water. The calcium in the Micro reacts with the phosphate and sulphate in PermaBloom when they meet in concentrated form, and a white deposit forms that the plant can no longer absorb. Pour each part into the final volume of water, mix, and rinse the measuring cup before moving on to the second.
The TriPart Micro that suits your water
PermaBloom is not sufficient on its own, and it is TriPart Micro that completes the solution. If your tap water contains more than 70 mg of calcium per litre, choose TriPart Micro hard water; below that, or if you use reverse osmosis water or rainwater, choose TriPart Micro soft water. The calcium content appears on the annual analysis from your water supplier. The right choice avoids both a calcium deficiency, which shows on tomato fruit, and an excess that needlessly overloads the solution.
🐟 Fruiting plants in decoupled aquaponics
In a coupled aquaponic system, the water that feeds your plants is the fish water, and it is particularly short of potassium, calcium and iron, which holds back fruit filling. PermaBloom is a hydroponics solution, dosed for roots on their own: for a stocked pond, the Aquaponic Mix is designed to top up the water without disturbing the fish. It does, however, have its place in a decoupled installation, where the fruiting plants have their own reservoir. The guide to growing tomatoes in aquaponics details the varieties and how to manage these crops.
