These dosing pipettes draw up a few millilitres of a liquid fertiliser, a pH corrector or an additive, and release them drop by drop into the sump tank. The 3 ml pipette is for small doses, the 5 ml bulb pipette for larger additions. They are sold in packs of 10 or 25.
The summary
- What it is: transparent plastic pipettes, bulb or squeeze type.
- The two sizes: 3 ml graduated every 0.2 ml, 5 ml squeeze type graduated every millilitre.
- What it is for: liquid fertilisers and crop additives, pH correctors, water samples from the fish tank.
- The packs: 10 or 25 pipettes of the same size.
Dose liquid fertilisers and correctors drop by drop, without pouring by eye
The clear plastic dosing pipettes measure a few millilitres of liquid fertiliser, pH corrector or additive. The 3 ml pipette is graduated every 0.2 ml, the 5 ml bulb pipette every millilitre, and one pipette per product avoids cross-contamination. A complete fertiliser dosed this way never goes into the fish water.
A measuring cap is fine for 10 or 20 ml, but it becomes imprecise as soon as you need to pour 1 or 2 ml into a small tank. The dosing pipette solves this problem: you squeeze the bulb or bellows, dip the tip into the bottle, release, and the liquid rises into the transparent tube. A slow squeeze then releases it drop by drop, exactly where you want it, without splashing or running down the side of the bottle.
3 ml pipette
Its long, slim stem suits doses of 1 to 3 ml and dropwise application.
5 ml squeeze pipette
Its bulb draws up a larger volume in one go, for additions of a few millilitres.
💧 Dosing accurately in a small volume
The smaller the volume of water, the more the gap between the dose you want and the dose you actually pour affects the solution. In a 10-litre sump tank, a fertiliser dosed at 2 ml per litre is measured out with the bottle cap, since you need 20 ml. In a growing jar or a 1-litre seedling tray, the same dose drops to 2 ml, and the 3 ml pipette, graduated every 0.2 ml, becomes the right tool; the 5 ml one has a mark at every millilitre. The same reasoning applies to a pH corrector: you add a few drops, stir, measure, then repeat if needed, rather than pouring in too much at once. Using one pipette per product also avoids mixing an acid and a fertiliser in the same barrel.
One pipette per bottle, and check the pH after each addition
Dedicate one syringe to each product and mark it on the barrel with a felt-tip pen: that way you never carry any residual acid into a bottle of fertiliser. After each correction, check the result with an electronic pH meter or a pH drop test, then adjust in small steps.
🧪 Count your drops just once
It is often said that one millilitre makes twenty drops, but this rule of thumb does not hold for every liquid or every dropper tip. The pharmacy of the Geneva University Hospitals points out that the number of drops per millilitre depends on the liquid and the dropper, and cites a preparation that has 32 per millilitre. A viscous fertiliser forms large drops, a very fluid pH corrector smaller ones. Before dosing by the drop, count once how many drops of your product fill 1 ml, collecting them in a stoppered graduated syringe, and note that figure on the bottle. You then dose by the number of drops, with the same pipette, always holding the stem vertical.
Rinse the pipette after an acid or a fertiliser
Any leftover corrector or fertiliser dries inside the tube and skews the next dose. Rinse the pipette in clean water straight after use, drawing up and expelling the water two or three times, and keep it out of reach of children along with the products it is used to dose.
The pipette also has its place in small-volume soilless growing. A jar using the Kratky method, a seedling tray on a wick or an indoor planter holds only one or two litres of solution, and every millilitre of concentrated fertiliser counts. The CALMAG AGENT soft water corrector is dosed at 0.1 to 0.5 ml per litre: for a 5 L watering can, the dose falls between 0.5 and 2.5 ml, which the 3 ml pipette measures to within 0.2 ml. The fruiting booster for fruiting vegetables is dosed at 1 ml per litre, never more, which is 3 ml for a small 3 L watering can. Both products feed crops grown in soil or in hydroponics and never go into the fish water. Measure the water first, then add each component separately with its own pipette, mixing between additions, and check the pH last. For larger volumes, a precision scale or a graduated syringe takes over, the pipette remaining the tool for fine adjustments.
🐟 Dosing in aquaponics
In aquaponics, the plants' water is also the fish's water, and an addition that is too abrupt is felt first in the tank. New Mexico State University recommends a pH of 6.8 to 7.0 as a compromise between fish, nitrifying bacteria and plants, and advises alternating calcium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide to raise it towards 7, since nitrification gradually lowers it. These bases are best diluted in a bucket of water from the system before being poured in, and the syringe is then used to draw up the exact dose of solution. This way you keep corrections slow, leaving time to check the water between two additions. The article on pH regulation in aquaponics sets out the thresholds to observe.
Iron is often lacking in aquaponics, because fish feed supplies little of it. The FAO manual advises maintaining 1 to 2 mg/L of chelated iron, and the same university recommends adding DTPA chelated iron at 2 mg/L every three weeks. For a small volume, a stock solution is easy to prepare: 1 g of 11% DTPA chelated iron contains 110 mg of iron, and dissolved in 110 ml of water, it supplies 1 mg per millilitre. One millilitre then brings half a litre of water to 2 mg/L, and 4 ml is enough for a 2-litre seedling tray. For a system of several hundred litres, weigh the powder on the scale instead.
A complete hydroponic fertiliser, however, never goes into the fish water. It belongs in pots and seedlings raised before they enter the system, or in a decoupled installation, where a separate growing loop receives the fish water without returning it to the pond and where plant nutrition can be supplemented. The same pipettes then dose the fertiliser for the growing loop, without a drop reaching the fish tank.
Finally, keep separate pipettes for the tank water and for the fertilisers: the one that draws the sample for a test must never have touched a concentrate, otherwise the reading will be skewed. Rinse it in the tank water just before sampling, so that clear water left in the barrel does not dilute the sample, and always sample from the same spot. For the exact volume of the test, follow the dropper or syringe supplied with the test. The aquaponics water test pack tracks pH, ammonium, nitrites, nitrates and carbonate hardness after each correction.
