Stainless steel scoop for picking up pellets and fertiliser without touching them
A stainless steel scoop is used to take a dry product from its bag or its bucket. You use it for the ration of pellets for your fish as well as for a fertiliser or a powdered corrector, which you can scoop in this way without putting your hand in. Its deep bowl holds the pellets during the journey, and the stainless steel rinses clean under running water.
📏 Three bowl sizes
The three scoops have the same shape and differ in the size of the bowl, which should be chosen according to the container you are scooping from rather than the product. A resealable fertiliser pouch only admits a narrow bowl, whereas a wide-open sack of granules or a storage bucket empties faster with a wide bowl. The front opening, at 4.5, 5.5 or 7.5 cm, also determines the neck you can pour into without spilling.
11 cm scoop
6 cm wide and 3 cm deep, it fits into a fertiliser bag and scoops out a few grams of powder.
13 cm scoop
8.4 cm wide and 4.5 cm deep, it draws the ration for a family pond from a bag of pellets.
15 cm scoop
9.6 cm wider for the same depth, it suits large portions and storage buckets.
⚖️ From the shovelful to the gram
A scoop does not measure grams, because the weight of a scoopful depends on the density of the product. So weigh a level scoop of each of your products once on a precision scale, then note that weight on the bag. You then dose by the number of scoops, which is enough for the daily ration as well as for a maintenance addition. If a level scoop of your feed weighs 25 g, for example, the 100 g ration for a pond holding 5 kg of fish is given as 4 scoops.
A sealed bucket for the pellet supply
Pour your feed supply into a 10.7 L food-grade bucket with a lid: the pellets stay dry there, which slows the oxidation of their fats once the bag has been opened. The scoop stays in the bucket, ready for the next feed. The opened bag can then stay closed in its storeroom, and you only bring a few weeks' supply to the pond.
One scoop per product family
Keep one scoop for fish food and another for fertilisers, so that no residue of mineral powder ends up in the feed. Rinse the fertiliser scoop and dry it after each use, because a hygroscopic powder sticks to damp metal and throws off the next scoopful.
🐟 Dosing in aquaponics
In aquaponics, the fish feed becomes the fertiliser for the plants, so an excessive ration loads the water with ammonia. A ration of 2% of body weight per day means, for example, 100 g of pellets for 5 kg of fish, split into one or two meals. Mineral corrections are also dosed to the gram, like the 18 g of DTPA chelated iron that add 2 ppm of iron to 1,000 litres of water. Once the scoop has been weighed, this step can be repeated without getting the scales out for every addition.
