10.7 L white food-grade bucket with lid
This 10.7-litre bucket in food-grade polypropylene closes with a clip-on lid.
It is used for water changes, soaking decorations and dry storage. Keep it for this purpose only: a household bucket retains traces of detergent.
The summary
- What you receive: a 10.7-litre food-grade polypropylene bucket, with its handle and lid.

Food-grade 10.7-litre bucket with lid, reserved for the tank and the pond
This food-grade polypropylene bucket holds 10.7 litres, is carried by a handle and closes with a clip-on lid. It helps with the regular tasks of an aquarium, a pond or an aquaponic system: collecting siphoned water, soaking a decoration, preparing top-up water or dissolving a product before adding it to your circuit.
🪣 Three uses that come up every month
The first is the water change: the siphon bell fills the bucket while you clean the bottom of the tank, and you empty it outside. The second is soaking, that of a root that needs to be leached for several days, with the lid on to keep the dust out. The third is storage, of an opened bag of pellets or a spare grow medium, away from damp.
🔒 The dedicated bucket
Keep this bucket for the tank and the pond only, without exception. A household detergent leaves a film of surfactants on the walls, and that film passes into your water at the first fill, even though these molecules are toxic to fish even at low doses. Write on it in marker pen what it is reserved for, store it with your aquarium equipment and rinse it with clean water only: the smooth polypropylene wall does not hold on to deposits, so a rinse is enough. Do not use any washing-up liquid or disinfectant, even diluted.
The lid also changes the way you store it, since a closed bucket stacks and stays clean between uses. It also prevents splashing when you carry pond water to the house for testing, or tank water to the vegetable garden. Full, the bucket weighs nearly 11 kg, since a litre of water weighs 1 kg, which is still a load you can carry in one hand, by the handle, over a few metres. On the day you take a pump or a filter apart, it finally holds the wet parts so that you do not lose them.
💧 Top-up water in aquaponics
An aquaponic system loses water every day through evaporation and plant transpiration, and this loss is best made up with regular top-ups rather than large water changes. The bucket then serves as a preparation tank. Tap water contains chlorine or chloramine, which are harmful to nitrifying bacteria as well as to fish gills. Left for 24 to 48 hours in an open bucket, it loses its chlorine by off-gassing and at the same time comes up to room temperature, which avoids a temperature shock when you pour it in. Chloramine, which is more stable, does not escape into the open air: an anti-chlorine water conditioner neutralises it as soon as you fill up, just as it neutralises chlorine if you cannot wait. The article on pond evaporation in summer gives the volumes to plan for.
🧮 Measuring a pump's flow rate
A known volume also lets you check the real flow rate of your pump, which falls with delivery height and with a clogged strainer. Pour 10 litres, measured with a jug, into the bucket and mark the level reached, then direct the pump outlet into the emptied bucket and time how long it takes to reach that mark. A pump that fills these 10 litres in 20 seconds delivers 1,800 litres per hour, since an hour contains 180 lots of 20 seconds. The same bucket is also useful for dissolving a powder in the system water before adding it, such as the potassium bicarbonate that corrects the KH.
