The summary

Tap water that is safe for goldfish

JBL's Biotopol R water conditioner makes tap water safe for goldfish and other cold-water fish. It neutralises chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals, and the aloe vera protects the mucous membranes. The dose is 10 ml per 20 litres of fresh water, so a 100 ml bottle treats 200 L.

Tap water is safe for humans to drink, but not for fish. It contains chlorine or chloramines, added to disinfect it, which irritate the gills, and often traces of copper, lead or zinc from the pipework. Every time you fill the tank and every time you change the water, these substances end up in your aquarium. JBL Biotopol R neutralises them, with a formula designed for goldfish and other coldwater fish.

🛡️ What it neutralises

Biotopol R neutralises chlorine and chloramines, and renders the copper, lead and zinc in tap water harmless. It also provides care ingredients: aloe vera, which protects the mucous membranes, B vitamins and an extract of eyebright. Goldfish, which often receive frequent water changes in small volumes, are exposed to fresh water more often than other fish, which justifies a formula designed specifically for them.

The dose is 10 ml per 20 litres. The 100 ml bottle therefore treats 200 litres of water, and the 250 ml bottle 500 litres. The safest approach is to treat fresh water in a bucket before pouring it into the aquarium. Then wait 30 to 60 minutes before adding any medication; a plant fertiliser, however, can be added straight away.

Treating the water in a bucket for a shrimp tank

If you fill the tank straight from the hose, the copper in the tap water reaches the aquarium before it has been bound, which can be fatal for shrimp and other invertebrates. In these tanks, always add the conditioner to the bucket first, then pour in the treated water.

💧 An example routine

Let us take a 60-litre aquarium. When you first fill it, you add 30 ml of Biotopol R. Then, every 2 to 3 weeks, you replace a third of the water, i.e. 20 litres, and treat only this fresh water with 10 ml. The 100 ml bottle therefore covers the start-up and 7 water changes, which is several months of maintenance for this tank. Also check the temperature of the fresh water, which must stay close to that of the aquarium, within 1 or 2 degrees.

A food suited to goldfish

A goldfish eats a lot and produces a lot of waste, so its ration has a direct impact on water quality. JBL ProNovo Fantail Grano granules, designed for goldfish, are fed in small portions that the fish finish quickly. This limits the leftovers that decompose between water changes.

The conditioner does not replace water changes: it makes new water safe, but it is regular water changes that dilute the accumulated nitrates. The goldfish lives without heating, in cooler water than tropical fish, and it needs a generous volume and a powerful filter: allow for a tank of at least 100 litres rather than a bowl. Check the nitrite from time to time with a NO2 nitrite test in drops, because only tests show whether your filter and the frequency of your water changes are sufficient.

🌱 In aquaponics

The goldfish is one of the fish most commonly used in small indoor aquaponic systems, as it tolerates unheated water. The tap water you add to make up for evaporation must, here too, be free of chlorine, which would weaken the filter bacteria. The guide to goldfish in aquaponics sets out the volumes and care that suit this fish.
