The summary

  • What you receive: a 3-tier rack, 12 drilled tubes with 108 slots, a pump, a timer and 108 baskets.
  • The space it takes up: 95 cm long on the floor, with the planting density of a market-garden greenhouse.
  • The habit that matters: sow in waves, because 108 lettuces ready on the same day cannot all be eaten.
  • How to choose: 108 slots in round PVC tubes, spread over 3 tiers, for 95 cm of length on the floor.

3-tier rack for leafy vegetables and herbs, pump and timer included

This 3-tier NFT hydroponic rack carries 108 planting positions on 12 food-grade PVC-U tubes, over a floor length of 95 cm. It is intended for leafy vegetables, fine herbs and aromatics, in soilless growing as well as in aquaponics, and it comes with the pump, the timer and 108 baskets.

This rack holds 12 tubes on 3 levels, giving 108 planting positions over 95 cm of floor length, and it favours planting density. The pump sends the nutrient solution to the very top, from where it runs through the tubes of one level and then drops to the next, until it returns to your reservoir. It is a thin-film system, the nutrient film technique, or NFT, in which the roots sit in a few millimetres of moving water rather than in an immersed volume.

This density extends the water's path. The film travels through 12 tubes instead of 4, and crosses just as many junctions to pass from one level to the next. Each of these junctions is a point where deposits can build up, and a deposit that builds up will eventually divert the film to one side of the tube, leaving the other half of the roots dry with no visible sign from above.

🔁 The timer and what it controls

A timer comes with the pump. It is for switching the pump off at night on established crops, when the room is cool and evaporation drops. On young plants whose roots do not yet reach the bottom of the tube, it is no use at all, since an interrupted film of water leaves short roots out of the water, and they do not recover. So you connect it once the crop is established, and not before. The practical test is simple: just lift a basket and check whether the roots hang freely in the tube. As long as they stay in the sponge, the pump runs continuously.

🌿 Three tiers, three light levels

A tiered rack does not get the same light from top to bottom. The upper level shades the middle one, which shades the bottom one, and the difference shows first in the size of the leaves. There are two ways of dealing with this: either place the rack against a light-coloured wall and turn it a quarter turn from time to time, or keep the bottom level for species that tolerate partial shade, such as mint, parsley or lamb's lettuce. A grow light bar on each level settles the matter for good, at the cost of extra electrical installation. The choice therefore depends on the crops: on a rack planted entirely with salad leaves, the difference between top and bottom shows at harvest, whereas a rack shared between salads, herbs and lamb's lettuce keeps the bottom for the partial-shade species.

108 plants, a single water supply to adjust

On this rack, all 108 positions draw on the same solution, so a dosing error does not affect a single tube but the entire harvest. So get the complete hydroponic nutrient and an electronic pH tester, which reads the solution feeding your 108 plants to two decimal places, along with the rack, and take your first reading before putting a single plant in. A correction made at this stage is made on a tank with no plants exposed.

Empty a full rack before moving it

A rack loaded with 108 plants and its water cannot be pushed from one corner of a room to another, because the joints between tiers flex whenever the structure twists, and a joint that has worked loose will drip constantly from then on. Choose the final position before the first filling, and drain the circuit before any move. Also provide a drip tray or a water-resistant surface underneath the whole unit, since a leaking joint can go unnoticed for several hours.

🗓️ Sowing in batches

Filling all 108 positions at once gives you 108 lettuces ready in the same week, then a completely empty rack for a month. Instead, sow 2 tubes per week: as a lettuce occupies its place for 5 to 6 weeks, the rack is full after about 6 weeks, and from then on you harvest 2 tubes each week, that is 18 plants, which you replant straight away. This pace assumes a germination tray set beside the rack, where the week's sponges get started while the previous ones finish their cycle in the tube.

🐟 Pond water in 12 test tubes

Feeding this rack from a fish tank is possible, provided you take the length of the run into account. The suspended solids in living water settle in every tube and at every joint, and a three-tier rack has many more than a table with four channels. Mechanical filtration upstream becomes the key component of the installation, even before the pump. What you gain in return is a solution already loaded with nitrates, which you no longer have to dose yourself. A coir mat or a filter foam placed at the tank outlet catches most of the fine particles before the pump, and is much easier to rinse than a tube. Factor this item in from the design stage, because adding it afterwards means reworking the whole circuit.

🧽 The end-of-run rinse

At the end of a crop cycle, the lids are opened and the tubes rinsed with clean water, scrubbing the bottom along its full length. The slimy deposit that forms there traps particles from the next crop and ends up thickening the film. Used sponges go to the compost, while the baskets are rinsed and ready for another round after soaking overnight. Use this moment to check every joint: a white mark or a dry deposit on the outside signals a micro-leak that cannot be seen while water is circulating.

📐 Space and structure

A rack of this type takes up little floor space and a lot of height. Allow enough clearance to reach the top level without needing a stepladder, since you will be there every week to sow and harvest. Also check that the floor is level, because a stacked structure twists on an uneven floor and it is the joints that take the strain. A water load spread over three tiers is modest compared with that of a grow bed, but the height makes the whole thing sensitive to the slightest imbalance, and a rack wedged level once and for all will not move for the whole season. Check the levelling again at the first full filling, as the weight of the water reveals faults that the empty structure does not show.

108 positions compared to other NFT systems

The table brings together two PVC pipe towers and three PVC gutter tables. It compares capacity, channel type and footprint.

Unsure whether to go for density or robustness? The number of places works one way, the floor space and working height the other. These two questions tell you which of the two matters most in your situation.
