NFT hydroponic kit : 36 plant sites & pump included
This NFT hydroponic tower stacks 4 food-grade PVC-U tubes, drilled with a total of 36 planting sites. The submersible pump, planting baskets and germination sponges are included.
The tower is suitable for lettuces, herbs and leafy vegetables, whether indoors, on a balcony or in a greenhouse, and has a footprint of 95 x 45 x 100 cm.
The summary
- What you receive: a tower with 4 perforated tubes offering 36 planting positions, complete with its pump, net pots, and germination sponges.
- The space it takes up: 95 cm long on the floor, 1 m tall, against a wall or in a corner.
- What you grow in it: lettuces, herbs, and leafy vegetables that are cut and replaced in succession.
- How to choose: compared with the channel tables in the range, this tower has a smaller footprint and costs less.
4 stacked food-grade PVC tubes, for lettuces, herbs and leafy vegetables
NFT runs a thin film of nutrient solution a few millimetres deep along the bottom of an angled channel. The roots dip into this film from below and breathe freely in the open air above, with no grow medium surrounding them. This kit stacks 4 channels, with a total of 36 planting sites, and includes the pump that feeds the top channel.
💧 The water trickle and its tank
The pump draws from the reservoir tank and sends water to the top of the tower. The water travels down through one tube, drops into the next, and so on until it returns to the tank. There is therefore no water stored in the tubes themselves: what they contain amounts to a thin film, and that film disappears within minutes once the pump stops. A self-watering pot, by contrast, holds a water reserve beneath the roots at all times.
Two straightforward habits follow from this constraint. Your pump runs continuously, day and night, because even a few hours' stoppage will cost you dry roots. And the reservoir tank should be large enough that its level never becomes critical between refills, since it is the reservoir, and only the reservoir, that holds the culture volume. A 1 m tower places that tank on the ground, beneath the structure, where it remains accessible without dismantling anything. A capacity of 30 to 50 litres is a good starting point for 36 growing sites; a smaller volume means topping up every 2 days at the height of the season, and makes every pH correction more abrupt.
🥬 What grows inside a tube
Lettuces and herbs
They occupy their slot for 3 to 5 weeks, then free up the space. That is the cycle a tube tower is designed for.
Leafy vegetables
Spinach, cut chard, mesclun: harvest leaf by leaf and the plant stays in place for several more weeks.
What doesn't hold up
A tomato or cucumber develops a root mass and a weight that neither this tube nor a 1 m tower can support.
Starter plants
They arrive already rooted, in a germination sponge or cube, never as a bare seed placed in the basket.
Keep the pump strainer submerged
The level in the reservoir drops more quickly once plants reach their full size and the room warms up. A submersible pump running dry overheats and is damaged, and you end up losing the pump on top of the crop. Check the reservoir level every time you walk past the tower, and top it up before it drops below the strainer.
The solution is prepared in the reservoir
All 36 plants draw from the same water, and that water is prepared in one place: the reservoir sitting beneath the frame. Pick up a complete hydroponic nutrient solution and a pH drop test kit at the same time: a correctly balanced solution from the very first fill will save you from the deficiencies that only show up in week three, once the tower is fully planted.
🐟 Connecting the tower to a pond
Water from a fish tank carries suspended solids that the nutrient film does not tolerate well. Particles settle on the bottom of the channel, thicken the film, and eventually block the joints between levels. If you feed this tower from a pond, upstream mechanical filtration is a prerequisite for reliable operation. The rest of the installation remains unchanged: same pump, same gradient, same baskets. What you gain in return is water that already carries its nitrates, derived from the nitrogen cycle, meaning nutrition to be topped up rather than built from scratch, with particular attention to iron and potassium, which pond water tends to supply poorly. The pH range also shifts: a stocked pond typically sits around 6.8 to suit both fish and bacteria, at the cost of slightly reduced availability of certain elements for the plants.
🧹 Maintenance between two cycles
Between cycles, the tubes come apart and are rinsed under clean water with the lids open. What you are looking for is the slippery biofilm that forms on the floor of the channel and traps particles during the next cycle. Spent germination sponges are discarded; the baskets are rinsed and reused. Allow a good hour for the 4 tubes, and take the opportunity to empty the tank and scrub its walls, since deposits start there. The pump strainer is rinsed at the same time, a partially blocked filter reduces flow well before the mesh looks visibly clogged.
🧪 pH and nutrition
Without a grow medium to buffer it, the solution changes quickly and should be corrected towards 5.8 to 6.2, the range in which nutrients remain available. Readings are taken once a week in an established crop, every 2 days in the early stages, and always in the tank rather than in a tube, the sample there being representative of the entire circuit. The solution is made up fresh every 2 to 3 weeks, with evaporation topped up in the meantime using plain water. A rising conductivity while the level drops indicates that the plants are taking up water faster than mineral salts, and a top-up of plain water corrects this more effectively than adding more fertiliser.
📐 Assembly and space requirements
The tower takes up less than half a square metre of floor space and requires height above all, with the tank sliding beneath the structure. The slope of the tubes is set during assembly and should be gentle, around 1 cm per metre is enough to keep the film flowing without it pooling at the bottom of the channel. Pay equal attention to lateral levelling: a tube tilted to one side will leave the opposite edge dry, meaning some positions on each row receive no water. Allow access on one side to open the tank, take measurements and top up without moving the whole unit, and ensure a reliable power socket is nearby for the pump. Assembly itself is done dry, then a first fill with clean water, run the pump for one hour to check the seals at every joint and confirm an even film across all 4 levels before a single plant goes into a net pot.
