Square 500 g scale accurate to 0.1 g, CD case format
The On Balance Square Scale CD weighs up to 500 g and reads to a tenth of a gram, on a round stainless steel pan, in a case the size of a CD case. Its fold-down lid carries the instructions on the inside, and a pouch protects it in a toolbox or a damp room.
The summary
- What you receive: the scale, its protective cover and two CR2032 batteries.
- The reading: a display to a tenth of a gram up to 500 g, on a round 10 cm platform.
- What it is for: weighing the fish ration, a powdered fertiliser or a batch of seeds.
- Calibration: a dedicated button on the front, with a 500 g calibration weight sold separately.
Square pocket scale, 500 g in 0.1 g steps, supplied with a pouch and batteries
The On Balance Square Scale CD weighs up to 500 g and reads to a tenth of a gram, in a square case the size of a CD case, closed by a fold-down lid. Supplied with batteries and a pouch, it weighs out the fish ration for a small aquaponic system, powdered fertilisers and seeds.
A pocket scale does not last long in your grow room: powders, drops of nutrient solution and humidity eventually reach the sensor. The Square Scale CD from On Balance answers this problem through its design. Its square case, the size of a CD case and just 1.3 cm thick, closes with a fold-down lid, and it travels in a black pouch supplied with the scale. With a 500 g capacity read to a tenth of a gram, it covers most weighing tasks in a small aquaponic system or a hydroponic tank.
🔲 Four buttons and a lid
The front panel has four buttons: on/off, mode to change unit, tare to cancel out the weight of a cup, and calibration. The round stainless steel platform, 10 cm in diameter, takes a cup or a small bowl, up to 500 g read to a tenth of a gram. The fold-down lid has the instructions printed on the inside, so you do not have to hunt for the manual when setting up the device.
Fish ration
The tared cup receives the day's feed, weighed to a tenth of a gram.
Salts and fertilisers
The Epsom salt and bicarbonate for a small system are weighed out in one go.
Seeds
Microgreen seeds are shared out by weight between several trays.
🌱 In aquaponics and hydroponics
In a small aquaponic system, the scale is used first and foremost for the feed ration. The FAO sets this at 1 to 2% of the fish's body weight per day above 50 g, and at about 1% above 100 g, and it links it to the cultivated area: 40 to 50 g of feed per square metre per day for leafy vegetables, 50 to 80 g for fruiting vegetables. Your 1 m² bed of lettuces therefore calls for around forty grams of feed a day, a quantity the Square Scale CD weighs to the nearest tenth of a gram in a tared cup. Weighing rather than pouring by hand prevents overfeeding, which the guide to common mistakes in aquaponics ranks among the most frequent pitfalls: uneaten feed decomposes and loads the water with ammonia.
The cover within easy reach
Store the scale with the lid closed and in its case after each weighing session, away from the steam of a tank or a humidifier. The sensor stays accurate for longer, and calibration can be done less often.
Your mineral corrections also go through it. Potassium bicarbonate raises the KH at a rate of about 36 g per cubic metre per degree, which is 18 g to raise a 500 L system by one degree. In hydroponics, it weighs the powdered fertilisers for a nutrient solution made up in a sump tank of a few dozen litres. For doses under a gram, such as an iron chelate for a bucket, the mini scale with 0.01 g resolution takes over.
🎯 Calibrating and reading correctly
The calibration key restores the scale's accuracy using a 500 g mass, sold separately, following the sequence printed inside the cover. Between two calibrations, the 100 g check weight confirms in a few seconds that the display is still accurate. For a stable reading, switch the scale on while empty on a hard, level surface, away from an air pump or a fan, and wait for the figure to settle before noting it down. Bear in mind that the 500 g capacity includes the container: a heavy jar reduces by the same amount the quantity of product you can weigh.
🔍 What the tenth means
The tenth of a gram displayed is not a promise of accuracy to the nearest tenth. This readability only tells you by how much the display moves from one digit to the next, and accuracy depends on calibration as well as on weighing conditions. On a 40 g ration, an error of 0.2 g amounts to 0.5% and makes no difference to the fish, whereas on a 0.5 g dose it represents 40%. Also keep the scale dry: its 10-year guarantee covers manufacturing defects, but not water, drops or overloading. Selling a harvest by weight requires an approved scale; this one remains a dosing tool for your crops and your ponds.
