Three-tier rack for leafy vegetables and herbs, pump and timer included

Twelve tubes arranged over three levels, 108 planting sites in total, and 95 cm of floor length, this rack prioritises density above all else. The nutrient solution is pumped up to the top, flows through the tubes on each level and drops down to the next, until it returns to your reservoir tank. This is a thin-film system, using the well-known nutrient film technique, where roots sit in a few millimetres of moving water rather than being fully submerged.

This density comes at a cost to water flow. The film travels through twelve tubes instead of four, and crosses just as many junctions to move from one level to the next. Each of those junctions is a spot where deposits build up, and a deposit that takes hold will eventually push the film to one side of the tube, leaving the other half of the roots dry with nothing visible from above to indicate it.

🔁 The timer and what it controls

A timer accompanies the pump. It is used to switch the pump off at night on established crops, when the room is cool and evaporation drops. With young plants whose roots have not yet reached the bottom of the tube, it serves no purpose: an interrupted flow of water leaves short roots exposed and out of water, and they do not recover. You therefore connect it once the crop is established, and not before. The practical indicator is straightforward, simply lift a basket and check whether the roots are hanging clearly down into the tube. As long as they remain within the plug, the pump runs continuously.

🌿 Three levels, three lights

A stacked rack does not receive the same light from top to bottom. The upper level shades the middle, which shades the bottom, and the difference shows up in the leaves before it shows up on the scales. There are two ways to work with this: either place the rack against a light-coloured wall and turn it a quarter-turn from time to time, or reserve the bottom level for species that tolerate partial shade, such as mint, parsley, or lamb's lettuce. A grow light per level resolves the issue once and for all, at the cost of an additional electrical installation. The decision comes down to what you plan to grow, since a rack devoted entirely to salad leaves handles the difference between top and bottom poorly, whereas one split between salad leaves, herbs, and lamb's lettuce can turn it to advantage.

108 plants, a single water supply to adjust

On this rack, all 108 positions draw from the same solution, so a dosing error affects not one tube but the entire harvest. Pick up the complete hydroponic nutrition and something to read the pH at the same time as the rack, and take your first reading before placing a single plant. That is the only moment when making a correction costs you five minutes rather than a whole cycle.

Twelve tubes empty before moving on

A rack loaded with 108 plants and its water cannot simply be pushed from one corner of the room to another, as the joints between levels are put under strain the moment the frame twists, and a joint that has worked loose will drip continuously afterwards. Choose the final position before the first fill, and drain the circuit before any move. Allow for a drip tray or a water-resistant surface beneath the whole unit, since a joint leak can go unnoticed for several hours.

The first-day pitfall

Filling all 108 slots at once gives 108 lettuces ready in the same week, then an entirely empty rack for a full month.

The right frequency

Sow one tube per week. After twelve weeks, you harvest a full tube every week and replant one straight away, so you are never short or overloaded at any point.

What it requires

A germination tray is needed alongside the rack, where this week's sponges get started while the previous batch finishes its cycle in the tube.

🐟 Pond water flowing through twelve tubes

Feeding this rack from a fish tank is possible, and this is where the length of the circuit makes itself felt. Suspended matter from living water settles in every tube and at every junction, and a three-tier rack has far more of these than a four-channel table. Mechanical filtration upstream becomes the key component of the whole setup, even before the pump. What you gain in return is a solution already loaded with nitrates, which you no longer need to dose yourself. A coco fibre mat or a filter foam placed at the tank outlet catches most of the fine particles before the pump, and rinses out far more easily than a tube. Factor in this element from the design stage, as adding it retrospectively means reworking the entire circuit.

🧽 The end-of-cycle rinse

At the end of a run, the lids are opened and the tubes rinsed under clean water, scrubbing the full length of the base. The slippery deposit that builds up there traps particles from the next run and gradually thickens the film. Spent sponges go to the compost, while the baskets are rinsed and returned to service after an overnight soak. Take this opportunity to check every joint, a white mark or dry deposit on the outside indicates a micro-leak that is invisible when the circuit is full of water.

📐 Space and structure

A rack of this type takes up little floor space but a great deal of height, which shifts the constraint rather than removing it. Allow enough clearance to reach the top level without climbing a stepladder, since you will be there every week to sow and harvest. Check that the floor is level, as a stacked structure will twist on an uneven surface and it is the joints that bear the strain. The water load spread across three levels remains modest compared to that of a grow bed, but the height makes the whole thing sensitive to the slightest imbalance, and a rack levelled once and for all will not move for the rest of the season. Re-check the levelling at the first full fill, as the water load will reveal faults that the empty structure does not.
