Miniature lotus with white-green double flowers, for a decorative terrace bowl or pot

Standing 20 to 30 cm above the water, Yu Tang Jin Ma is a bowl lotus with double white-green flowers about ten centimetres across. Its round foliage measures 10 to 15 cm, so the whole plant fits in a decorative bowl or pot of 10 to 20 litres. You receive a bare rhizome, with no leaf or stem.

🎨 A colour between yellow and green

The double flower is a creamy white with soft green highlights, turning more yellow towards the centre, where golden stamens surround a bright green receptacle. This colouring places the cultivar among the yellow lotuses, even though it looks almost white from a few metres away. Its full corolla holds many petals, and the plant is very vigorous and free-flowering for such a compact size: the blooms follow one another all summer above foliage that stays at table height, which puts the flower within easy view on a terrace.

Six tablets per plant, buried in the bowl

Buy the aquatic plant fertiliser at the same time, because a 10-litre bowl offers far less reserve than a pond basket, and a lotus this vigorous will exhaust it quickly. A lotus feeds 2 to 3 times as much as a water lily, that is 6 to 9 tablets per plant; for this small size, stick to 6 tablets, pushed 2 cm into the soil around the rhizome without touching it. Apply them at planting, then once each spring, and nothing is poured into the water of the bowl, which stays clear.

🥛 Choosing the container

Choose a container that is round, solid and without drainage holes: a decorative pot 30 cm wide and about twenty centimetres deep holds the 10 to 20 litres required. Fill it with fine, clay-rich garden soil, leaving at least 10 cm free above for the water, then lay the rhizome flat, growing tips pointing towards the centre, under the weight of a stone that stops it floating until it has rooted. The bowl is filled with water straight away, to 10 to 20 cm above the soil, and the rhizome starts into growth when this water reaches 20 °C. Your bowl belongs where direct sunlight reaches it for at least 6 hours a day.

Pond sludge is not a grow medium

Never set the rhizome directly in the sludge of a lined pond, even for a lotus of this size. The rhizome of a Nelumbo runs horizontally and colonises shallow bottoms, whereas a full, round container keeps it where you put it. You also keep the option of lifting the pot out in spring to divide it. Other surface aquatic plants do not need this precaution, but the lotus does.

In a pond where fish and bacteria share the same water, you therefore set the bowl on a support, at the height that gives 10 to 20 cm of water above the soil. The lotus's food then stays enclosed in the pot, because a tablet buried in the grow medium feeds the rhizome, whereas the same fertiliser poured into the water would feed the algae first. A layer of gravel on the soil also stops the fish from digging in the bowl. The article on growing lotus in aquaponics lists this cultivar among the dwarf varieties suited to small ponds.

🗓️ Divide after three seasons

After 2 to 3 seasons, the rhizome has filled the whole container and it is time to divide it. Take advantage of March, when the plant is still dormant, to lift out the root ball, detach a piece bearing 2 or 3 tubers and an intact tip, then replant it in fresh soil, in the same bowl. The rest of the rhizome can fill a second container. Between two divisions, do not disturb the bowl again, neither to move it nor to repot it, which lets the plant settle in.

🏠 The bowl sheltered in winter

In autumn, the Yu Tang Jin Ma loses all of its foliage, and its rhizome spends the winter dormant under the water. This lotus withstands frost like a hardy water lily, but your 10 to 20 litre bowl, standing on a terrace, can freeze solid right down to the soil in a harsh winter. In that case, bring it into a frost-free garage or cellar, filled with water, and put it back out in spring. Placed in a pond, under a sufficient depth of water, it stays in place all year round and starts growing again when the water warms up.
