Lotus Princess Kennedy of TMC
This large white lotus with a single flower rises above 1.22 m over the water. Its broad petals, barely tinged pink at the tip, surround a crown of golden stamens, and it is grown in a round 50 cm pot.
The rhizome is dispatched from 1 April to 15 June, while dormant and before the leaves emerge. An order placed outside this period is dispatched when the following season opens.
The summary
- The colour: a clean white, barely tinged pink at the tip of some petals.
- The size: more than 1.22 m above the water, large lotus class.
- Where it comes from: a seedling selected and then named by a Louisiana nursery.
- What to plan for: a round 50 cm pot and clay-rich garden soil.
Large single-flowered white lotus, over 1.22 m above the water
Princess Kennedy of TMC is a large white-flowered lotus, supplied as a bare rhizome in spring. Its flower is single, meaning it has fewer than 20 petals, broad and rounded, around a golden crown of stamens. The plant rises above 1.22 m over the surface, which places it in the large lotus class, and this size determines everything else, starting with the container.
The size
The upright foliage rises above 1.22 m over the water, on long, rigid petioles.
The pot
A round pot 50 cm wide and 30 to 45 cm deep holds a mature plant.
Water
Allow 20 to 30 cm of water above the soil, the usual guide for large lotuses.
🤍 A white with the faintest blush of pink
The flower opens a clean white, and only the tip of some petals carries a fine pink tint, more visible on the outer petals. This white stands out from a distance above tall foliage, and it makes the golden stamens at the centre of the cup show up. On a pond, this contrast draws the eye, whereas a pink lotus blends more into the bankside vegetation; you can compare the shades in the aquatic plants collection.
Raising a one-off plant yourself
If the idea of raising your own seedling appeals to you, pick up a pack of pink Nelumbo nucifera seeds alongside it. Every germinated seed gives a plant that nobody else owns, with a flower close to the type but never identical, and you then choose the one you like best. The rhizome gives you this particular variety from the very first season, whereas a seedling gives you a one-of-a-kind plant after several years.
🧬 A seedling that became a variety
This variety is not the result of a planned cross. It came from a seedling raised by Dr Daike Tian and entrusted to a Louisiana nursery, where the plant was spotted for its flower, propagated, then released under its own name. Every lotus seed gives a plant different from its parents, and only division of the rhizome reproduces a plant identically. This is why a named lotus is sold as a rhizome, and never as a packet of seeds under its variety name.
The rhizome you receive therefore comes from a division, made during winter dormancy. It arrives cleaned, leafless and wrapped in damp paper, and it is only dispatched between 1 April and 15 June, before the leaves develop. When planting, you lay it flat on a layer of heavy clay soil at least 15 cm deep, wedge it with a stone so that it stays pressed against the soil, then fill with water. It starts to grow when the water reaches 20 °C.
🌱 A tall lotus in aquaponics
In an aquaponics installation, a lotus of this size has its place on the floor of the main pond, in a tub or a mesh basket that protects the rhizome from the fish. Its roots take up some of the nitrates and phosphates produced by waste and uneaten feed, with peak uptake from April to August. As the system water already supplies nitrogen, the fertiliser tablets stay out of this tub: they would release into the shared water nutrients that your tests would then pick up. The guide to growing lotus in aquaponics details this setup.
🧩 Dividing the plant in March
A 50 cm pot stays under 80 cm in diameter, so the plant is divided in March, before growth starts, as soon as the rhizome has filled the space. Turn the pot over to slide the root ball out, free the rhizomes without bending them, then cut the chain 3 or 4 cm from a node. The piece to keep is the one at the end, a chain of 2 or 3 tubers whose growing tip must stay intact, otherwise it will not regrow. Replant it straight away in fresh soil.
