Eheim classicLED waterproof LED strip light for aquariums, daylight or plants
EHEIM's classicLED is a slim, waterproof LED strip light that sits on the aquarium using extendable supports. The daylight version gives daylight at 6500 K; the plants version, at 7700 K with more red, promotes plant growth.
The daylight comes in five lengths, from 550 to 1,240 mm, the plants in three, from 940 to 1,240 mm, and the power supply is included.
The summary
- Which light bar: daylight or plants, depending on the length of the tank.
- Its strengths: IPX7 waterproof, 35,000 hours, power supply included.
- Which length: equal to or just under that of the tank.
- Daylight or plants: natural daylight, or an enhanced spectrum for plants.
A slim, waterproof light, set to the length of your tank
EHEIM's classicLED light bar illuminates a freshwater aquarium, in daylight at 6500 K (daylight) or at 7700 K with more red (plants) to encourage plant growth. It is waterproof to IPX7 and rated for at least 35,000 hours, and should be chosen at a length equal to or just under that of the tank, with a power supply supplied.
In an aquarium, light does two things at once: it shows off the fish and the decor, and it gives plants the energy without which they cannot grow. EHEIM's classicLED provides this light with an LED strip 33 mm wide and 6 mm thick, waterproof to IPX7, with a lifespan of at least 35,000 hours, or about 8 years at 12 hours a day. It comes in two light versions, depending on whether you mainly want to see the tank well or to grow plants.
💡 Daylight or plants
The daylight version, at 6500 K, reproduces a neutral daylight: the water looks clear and the fish keep their natural colours. It suits aquariums with few plants or those stocked with undemanding plants. The plants version, at 7700 K, boosts the red part of the spectrum, which plants use for growth. Its output is about 13% lower at equal length, but better targeted for a planted tank, and on a large tank you can combine one strip of each, side by side.
Lightly planted tank
The daylight tube gives a neutral daylight colour.
Planted aquarium
The plants tube provides a spectrum enriched in red.
Large tank
One light bar of each type can be fitted side by side.
Old tube to be replaced
The length closest to the old tube will do, with an adapter sold separately.
The length is chosen according to that of the aquarium. Each light bar is supplied with extendable brackets that add up to 85 mm: a 940 mm bar thus covers a tank of 940 to 1,025 mm, a 550 mm bar a tank of 550 to 635 mm. Measure the internal length of your aquarium, then choose the bar whose length is equal to or just below it. The low-voltage power supply is included, whereas a dimmer and adapters for replacing a T5 or T8 tube are sold separately.
A programmable socket for a fixed duration
Plants and fish both benefit from lighting that switches on and off at the same time every day. The daily timer, plugged in between the socket and the power supply of the light bar, sets this duration without you having to think about it. Set it to 8 to 10 hours: beyond that, algae take better advantage of the light than the plants do.
🔧 Fitting and programming
Place the brackets on the edges of the aquarium, adjust their spacing, then clip on the light bar. Being waterproof, it can be fitted under a lid, away from splashes, and can safely receive drops of condensation. In a planted aquarium of 100 x 40 x 50 cm, or about 200 litres, a 940 mm classicLED plants, possibly paired with a daylight of the same length, provides enough light for plants of moderate growth.
Light weakens with depth: the taller your tank, the less light reaches the bottom. For an aquarium more than 50 cm high, or for demanding plants in the foreground, two light units side by side are better than a single one, whereas a small, lightly planted tank is happy with a daylight tube. Start with a moderate lighting period, then lengthen it if the plants grow well and algae stay discreet. For demanding plants, an EHEIM pressurised CO2 kit complements the lighting, as light alone is not enough for their growth. Consumption remains low: a 940 mm light unit uses 13.4 W, which is less than 50 kWh a year at 10 hours a day.
🌱 In aquaponics
In indoor aquaponics, plants often lack light, especially in winter. A classicLED plants fitted above your aquaponic aquarium lights both the fish and the aquatic or semi-aquatic plants growing in the tank. For a grow bed of salads or herbs, horticultural lights remain more powerful, but the classicLED has the advantage of being waterproof and fitting under a lid. The article on getting started with indoor hydroponics details the light requirements of a crop grown in the home.
Clean the underside of your light bar every month, with the bar unplugged: limescale and condensation deposits reduce the light reaching the water. A soft cloth and a little diluted white vinegar are enough, followed by a rinse with clean water and drying before you put it back in place. While you are at it, check that the cable forms a loop below the socket, so that a drop running down the cable falls to the floor instead of reaching the socket.
