Plagron's Hydro Roots is a mineral root stimulator designed for hydroponics, whether on clay pebbles, rockwool or in substrate-free growing. Rich in phosphorus and boron, it thickens the fine root network of seedlings, cuttings and transplanted plants, at 1 ml per litre of nutrient solution.
The summary
- Composition: a mineral root additive, NPK 0-20-0 with boron, for soilless growing.
- Dose per sump tank: 1 ml per litre of solution, at each application, up to the 3rd week of flowering.
- Uses: seedlings, cuttings, plants transplanted into rockwool, clay pebbles or NFT.
- Aquaponic system: in a nursery or in a decoupled loop, never in the fish water.
A denser root system for seedlings, cuttings and plants grown without soil
Plagron Hydro Roots is a mineral root stimulator for hydroponics, NPK 0-20-0 with boron, with no organic matter to clog drippers and pumps. It is dosed at 1 ml per litre of solution, together with Hydro A and B, until the third week of flowering. In aquaponics, it stays in the nursery, never in the fish water.
Hydro Roots is an entirely mineral root additive, developed for plants grown in hydroponics, on clay pebbles, in rockwool or directly in water. Its formula combines phosphorus and boron, two elements involved in root formation, and contains no organic matter. That absence matters in a closed system: nothing ferments in the sump tank, and the nutrient solution stays stable for longer between changes. You add it to the solution you are already preparing, at a rate of 1 ml per litre.
Phosphorus
It takes part in cell division and expansion, which gives longer roots and more secondary roots.
Boron
It increases the activity of enzyme systems, at a very low content of 0.023% in the bottle.
The analysis of the bottle is NPK 0-20-0: 20.5% water-soluble phosphoric anhydride, plus 0.023% boron, with no nitrogen or potassium. Hydro Roots is therefore not a complete nutrient, and it never replaces the base fertiliser of your system. It is added after this, to a solution already prepared with a complete hydroponic fertiliser, such as a three-part fertiliser or the Hydro A and B fertiliser from the same range, with which it is recommended. The result you are after is a denser root mass, with more secondary roots and thicker root hairs, which multiplies the surface through which the plant draws water and dissolved nutrients.
🧪 Dosage and schedule
The dose is 1 ml per litre of solution, that is, a dilution of one in a thousand, at each change or top-up of the sump tank. Shake the bottle before dosing, then measure the volume with a graduated syringe rather than with the cap. For a 30-litre sump tank, you therefore add 30 ml. On short-cycle plants, the supplement is continued up to and including the third week of flowering, then stopped; the 100% HYDRO growing schedule runs it over the first five weeks of an eleven-week cycle, at 10 ml per 10 litres. Applied to the vegetable patch, this means that lettuces, spinach and herbs receive it until harvest, whereas tomatoes, peppers or strawberry plants receive it throughout growth and only during the first weeks of flowering.
The additive is most useful at the start. A rockwool cube in which a lettuce is sprouting, a basil cutting set in a hydroponic cloner, or a plant you have just transplanted into its basket all have a reduced root system, which has to colonise the grow medium or the water quickly. A solution that encourages secondary roots to appear shortens this phase, during which the plant remains vulnerable to excessive heat or a lack of oxygen. On a plant that is already well rooted, the supplement supports the renewal of the fine roots without changing anything in how you manage the crop.
Measuring the pH and conductivity of the final mix
Each product you add changes the solution slightly, and it is the final mix that reaches the roots. After adding Hydro Roots, a pH and conductivity tester tells you within seconds whether the solution is still between pH 5.5 and 6.5, the recommended range for hydroponics. You then adjust the pH last, once all the products have been mixed, and note the conductivity so you can follow how the sump tank changes from one day to the next.
An additive to keep out of the fish tank
Hydro Roots is intended for a hydroponic nutrient solution and never goes into the fish water. Do not pour it into the rearing tank or into a grow bed connected to the circuit. Keep it for seedlings, cuttings and independent trays, with dosing tools that are not used for the aquaponic system.
🌱 Nursery and decoupled aquaponics
In a coupled aquaponic system, the fish, the nitrifying bacteria and the plants share the same water. The pH is therefore a compromise, between 6.4 and 7.5, because nitrification slows markedly below 6, whereas a hydroponic solution is run between 5.5 and 6.5. An additive designed for a hydroponic solution therefore has no place in this water shared with the fish, where rooting depends first of all on dissolved oxygen, the water temperature and the health of the biological filter.
Hydro Roots, on the other hand, finds a real place around the system. The nursery is its first use: seedlings in rockwool or coir cubes can receive a solution dosed at 1 ml per litre during their first weeks, then switch to clear water for the last few days before transplanting, which the FAO guides place at least two weeks after the first true leaves appear. The plants thus arrive in the grow bed with a well-rooted root ball, without bringing any concentrated solution into the fish water. The second use is decoupled aquaponics, where the plant loop is separate from the fish loop and receives the rearing water, which you can then supplement and acidify like a hydroponic solution, with no consequence for the tank.
In a coupled circuit, the shortages you will meet most often do not involve phosphorus. Potassium is a limiting element in aquaponics and is supplemented, for example, with potassium bicarbonate, which also raises the pH. Iron is supplied in chelated form, with a target of 2 mg per litre, and a DTPA chelated iron suits the pH range of an aquaponic system. Finally, calcium is maintained with a carbonate that supports alkalinity at the same time. The article on deficiencies in aquaponics helps you recognise each of them on the leaf before correcting.
📦 Bottles, cans and storage
Hydro Roots comes in bottles of 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml and 1 L, then in containers of 5, 10 and 20 L. At 1 ml per litre, the 100 ml bottle treats 100 litres of solution, which comfortably covers a season of seedlings and cuttings on a nursery shelf. The litre bottle suits a family-sized hydroponic system renewed every week, and the large containers are aimed at greenhouses where several sump tanks run at the same time. Keep the bottle tightly closed between 0 and 35 °C, away from frost and direct sunlight, out of the reach of children: it will then keep for 4 years after its production date, as long as it has not been opened.
