Plagron's Vita Race is a foliar fertiliser with chelated iron, enriched with potassium and phosphorus, which is sprayed on the leaves once a week. Its iron helps pale foliage to green up again on lettuces, herbs and fruiting vegetables, from the growth stage to the first weeks of flowering.
The summary
- Composition: DTPA-chelated iron at 7.2 to 8%, with potassium and phosphorus, for spraying.
- Dilution: 3 ml per litre during growth, 5 ml at most during flowering.
- Frequency: one spray per week, up to the third week of flowering.
- French authorisation: AMM no. 1220195, all crops, 20 applications per year at most.
- Grow bed: for plants outside the system, as the iron in the pond is dosed into the water.
- Volume prepared: 100 ml for 20 litres of spray solution, 1 L for 200 litres.
An iron spray to green up the leaves, from growth through to the first flowers
Vita Race by Plagron is a foliar spray with chelated iron, plus potassium and phosphorus, in bottles from 100 ml to 1 litre. Diluted at no more than 5 ml per litre, it is sprayed once a week up to the third week of flowering. It is never sprayed over the bed of an aquaponic system.
A lettuce leaf that yellows between its veins while the veins stay green almost always signals an iron deficiency. Without iron, the plant makes chlorophyll poorly, the pigment that captures light, and its growth slows. Vita Race, from the Dutch brand Plagron, delivers this iron directly through the leaves, in a chelated form the plant absorbs quickly, without waiting for the roots to find it in a grow medium where it would be locked up. You spray it once a week, and the young leaves that form afterwards regain their colour.
🧪 An iron-rich solution
The Anses authorisation decision details its composition: 7.2 to 8% iron soluble in water, fully chelated by DTPA, 7.6 to 8% potassium and 4.6 to 5% phosphorus expressed as K2O and P2O5, both fully soluble, with a pH of 7.5 and 39% dry matter. The DTPA chelate wraps around the iron atom and stops it precipitating in water close to neutral, which makes it the most common form in soilless growing. The product is classified as a mineral element solution, and it is not subject to any hazard classification.
Dilute
Pour 5 ml of Vita Race per litre of water into a clean sprayer.
Spray
The tops and undersides of the leaves are wetted until the liquid begins to run off.
Repeat
The feed is repeated once a week, up to the third week of flowering.
Check the pH before treating yellowing foliage
Yellowing between the veins of young leaves points to iron, but a pH that is too high produces the same symptoms by locking up the iron already present in the solution or the grow medium. A check with an electronic pH and conductivity tester confirms the cause in a few seconds. If the pH is too high, correct it first, and Vita Race only comes in afterwards, if the foliage stays pale.
Spray in the shade, wearing gloves
A drop left on a leaf in full sun can mark it: spray early in the morning, when the stomata of the leaves open, or at the start of the lighting period for indoor growing. The authorisation decision requires wearing gloves and suitable work clothing, then washing your hands after treatment. Also keep the sprayer away from any fish pond.
On tomatoes, peppers or strawberries, spraying stops three weeks after the first flowers, which avoids wetting the developing fruit. On lettuces, spinach and herbs, the spray can accompany the crop for as long as it has not flowered, provided you wash the leaves thoroughly at harvest. Leaves that have already yellowed do not always turn fully green again, because iron moves little within the plant: it is mainly the new growth that shows the effect of the treatment, one to two weeks after the first applications.
The authorisation sets out a precise framework. Vita Race is used on all crops, as a foliar spray only, at one application per week and a maximum of 20 applications per year, up to the third week of flowering. Because it contains trace elements, it should only be used when a need has been established, that is, when the foliage or a test indicates an iron deficiency. The dose of 5 ml per litre corresponds exactly to the authorised ratio of 180 ml of product to 36 litres of spray solution, scaled down to a garden sprayer.
🌱 Iron in aquaponics
Iron is the element most often lacking in an aquaponic system, because fish feeds contain little of it and a pH close to 7 makes it less available. Vita Race nonetheless remains a foliar product, and spraying above a grow bed always ends up with drops running from the leaves into the system water. So you reserve it for plants that do not share the fish water: pots in the greenhouse, a separate hydroponic crop, or the plant loop of a decoupled aquaponic system whose water does not return to the pond. In the last two cases, it is sprayed on the leaves and never goes into the sump tank, where its organic components would clog the pipes.
In the coupled system, the correction goes through the water itself. A powdered DTPA chelated iron, dissolved and then added at around 2 mg/L roughly every three weeks, or as needed, feeds all the plants in the system. An iron test tells you when to top it up again, and the article on iron deficiency in aquaponics details the symptoms and what to do.
📄 Approval and sizes
Vita Race holds a marketing authorisation in France, MA no. 1220195, signed on 4 March 2022 for 10 years by recognition of its Belgian authorisation. Its holder is the Dutch company Bertels, which makes the Plagron range. The full Anses decision, available as a PDF, sets out the guaranteed composition, the authorised use and the recommended protective measures, and lets you check every figure before your first treatment.
At 5 ml per litre, the 100 ml bottle makes 20 litres of solution, enough to treat a few pots of herbs for a season. The 250 ml bottle makes 50 litres, for a balcony vegetable garden or a growing shelf, and the 1 litre bottle makes 200 litres, for a full greenhouse. Close the bottle after use and store it away from light and frost, out of the reach of children.
🗓️ Doses week by week
In the 100% NATURAL growing schedule, Vita Race is sprayed once a week and its dose changes with the stage. During the two weeks of growth, the spray mix is prepared at 30 ml per 10 litres, or 3 ml per litre. During the first three weeks of flowering, it goes up to 50 ml per 10 litres, the maximum dose of 5 ml per litre, then the sprays stop. The same programme feeds the roots with Alga Grow and then Alga Bloom, and the spray is added to these waterings without replacing them. It is suitable for your plants grown on peat or coco fibre grow media. Once diluted, your solution may smell and turn cloudy because of its biological components, with no consequence for the plants. A one- or two-litre pressure sprayer easily covers a growing shelf or a small greenhouse.
