These sinking pellets feed your koi and goldfish during the autumn, when the pond temperature drops from 20 to 10 °C. Rich in krill and wheat germ, they help your fish build up their reserves before the winter slowdown.
The summary
- What it is: a complete late-season food, in sinking pellets, in a 500 g tub or in a 1.5 or 3 kg pouch.
- Its recipe: 28% protein, 10% fat, 13% krill, fish oil and 2% garlic.
- When to feed it: when the water drops below 20 °C, until it settles at around 12 °C.
- How much to feed: as much as your fish eat in a few minutes, from 1 to 2 meals a day down to a few meals a week.
- How to choose: water temperature and the depth at which your fish feed point you towards the seasonal food.

Sinking transition pellets for koi and goldfish, in water at 10 to 20 °C
In autumn, the pond temperature drops from week to week. A koi carp or a goldfish is poikilothermic: its internal temperature follows that of the water, so its digestion slows as the water cools. These few weeks are also when it builds up the reserves that will carry it through the winter, and this food is formulated for that transition, in water between 20 and 10 °C.
🍂 Reserves before winter
The analysis declares 28% crude protein and 10% fat, a ratio of 3 to 1 that remains that of a feed for the active season. The recipe is based on wheat flour and wheat germ, two highly digestible raw materials for your fish, supplemented with salmon meal and 13% krill meal. The fish oil, at 2%, provides lipids that the fish stores easily, while garlic powder, beetroot, alfalfa and algae complete the formula. Each kilo also provides 25,000 IU of vitamin A, 2,000 IU of vitamin D3, 300 mg of vitamin E and 200 mg of vitamin C, with no colourings or preservatives.
The pellets are shaped like small sinking discs. When the water cools, your fish stay lower, in a layer where the temperature varies less, and are less inclined to rise to the surface. A pellet that sinks down to them is found and eaten, whereas a floating food sometimes stays untouched. At each meal, give only what your fish eat within a few minutes, then space the meals out as the temperature drops.
From 20 to 16 °C
Give 1 to 2 meals a day, at the mildest times.
From 16 to 13 °C
Move to one meal a day at most, then to a few meals a week.
Below 12 °C
You are switching to a winter food, lower in protein.
Remove any pellets left on the bottom
Uneaten sinking pellets break down on the bottom, where they load the water with ammonium and feed the following spring's algae. So start with a small handful, watch for 5 minutes, and reduce the next meal if pellets are still visible. In a deep pond where you cannot see the bottom, prefer two small meals to one large one.
Plan for the winter feed afterwards
When the water settles below 12 °C, your fish need a food that is even easier to digest, with less protein and more quickly available fats. The winter sticks for pond fish take over down to 5 °C. Order them at the same time as this food so you can mix the two for a week, which avoids an abrupt change just as digestion slows down.
Take a pond holding 4 koi of about 1 kg each and a few goldfish, making 4.5 kg of fish in all. At 17 °C, a ration of around 1% of that weight comes to 45 g a day, a small handful split across 2 feeds. The 1.5 kg bag then lasts about a month, and considerably longer once feeds are spaced out below 15 °C. After that, adjust the amount by watching the fish themselves: whatever they have eaten within a few minutes is the right dose.
🌱 Autumn in an aquaponic system
In aquaponics, the feed supplied is also the source of nitrogen for your plants, and autumn slows down the fish, the bacteria and the crops all at once. Nitrification is most efficient between 17 and 34 °C, so a biological filter loses efficiency as soon as the water drops below this threshold. A digestible feed, given in small quantities, leaves less waste for a filter that is slowing down. On the crop side, it is time to switch to cold-season leafy vegetables, as detailed in the article on autumn seedlings in aquaponics.
📦 Tub or pouch
The 500 g tub suits a small goldfish pond, and its measuring lid avoids dipping your hand into the feed. The resealable 1.5 and 3 kg bags suit koi ponds as well as aquaponic systems, and the 3 kg bag works out cheapest per kilo. Reseal the packaging after each feed and keep it dry and away from heat, to preserve the vitamins and the fish oil. A floating pond thermometer tells you each morning which feeding guide to follow.
