Rechargeable USB aquarium feeder, with a 200 ml reservoir or 15 compartments
The Petbank automatic aquarium feeder is recharged by USB cable, with no batteries, and attaches to the rim of the tank. It comes in three models: a 200 ml hopper programmable via a screen for up to 4 feeds a day, the same hopper on a 12 to 48 hour timer, or a carousel of 15 pre-measured portions.
Beyond holidays, an automatic feeder is useful for giving the same amount every day, at the same time, which hand feeding rarely manages over several weeks. This regularity matters as much for the balance of your water as for the fish themselves. The three models offered here are all recharged by USB cable and clip onto the edge of the tank; they differ in how they dose and schedule meals.
🔌 A battery rather than disposable batteries
The difference shows in use rather than at the point of purchase. A lithium battery rechargeable by USB cable lasts 3 to 6 months depending on the number of feeds on the reservoir models, then recharges in a few hours on any phone charger. You have no batteries to keep in stock, and you won't come home from a weekend away to find the unit switched off. The carousel, with its 700 mAh battery, lasts closer to 1 to 2 months, which comfortably covers a summer absence.
LCD screen, CY-009
200 ml hopper, up to 4 meals a day at set times, with 1 to 3 drum turns per meal.
Timer, CY-019
The same 200 ml reservoir, which turns once every 12, 24 or 48 hours depending on the dial setting chosen.
Carousel, CY-109
16 compartments of about 2 g each, 15 of which are filled: 15 meals dosed one at a time, in a closed housing.
🎛️ Adjusting the dose
On the model with a display, adjustment is done in two stages, first through the sliding opening of the drum, then through the number of turns per meal. This second control is valuable on a heavily stocked tank, where a wide opening would make dosing imprecise, and it lets you double a ration without touching the mechanical setting. The display stays legible once the unit is in place, so you do not have to unhook it every time you want to check a time. On the timer model, only the opening can be adjusted, and on the carousel the dose is whatever you put in each compartment.
Check the setting with a measurement
A poorly adjusted feeder will not show on the fish for several weeks, but it will show in the water within a few days. A test pack taken a week after commissioning will tell you whether the ration is right, and a single ammonium test is enough for the checks that follow. This measurement takes over from observation as soon as you are no longer there to watch the meal.
Keep the reservoir away from the damp of the tank
Install it as far as possible from the filter outlet and the air stone, keep its hopper two-thirds full so the food flows without forming a bridge, and choose pellets over flakes, which clump together faster in humid air. A closed aquarium lid makes the problem markedly worse, and in that case it is better to place the unit over an opening rather than in the middle of the surface.
📅 The schedule determines the nitrogen
In a system where fish, bacteria and plants share the same water, the nitrogen in the feed that the fish do not retain for growth comes back out into the water. Regular feeding gives a regular load, which your biofilter absorbs smoothly and which your plants take up as it comes. That is exactly the opposite of a large meal on Sunday and nothing on Tuesday, which produces a spike of ammonia followed by a dip. The article on the nitrogen cycle explains this mechanism in detail.
🧪 Finding the right dose
Start by clearly underdosing, and increase afterwards if needed. Run a test over a sheet of white paper, count what falls, and only add a notch if everything is eaten within 2 minutes. A week of underdosing does no harm to an adult fish, whereas a week of overdosing loads your water and shows up on the nitrite test. Repeat this test every time you change feed, because a denser pellet is dispensed in greater quantity at the same setting, and this is the mistake that crops up most often after a simple change of brand. Finally, note the chosen setting somewhere, on a label stuck under the unit for example, since an accidental reset would otherwise force you to start all the work again from scratch.
