Aquaponics fertiliser pack and pH test
This pack combines a 500 ml bottle of Aquaponic Mix, the organic NPK 0-0-4 fertiliser designed for water that houses fish, and a 30 ml drop-type pH test that gives around 500 tests. You feed your crops and check your water with the same purchase.
The summary
- What you receive: a 500 ml bottle of Aquaponic Mix and a 30 ml pH drop test.
- What the fertiliser does: it supplies the potassium and trace elements that the fish do not provide.
- The dose: 0.5 ml per 10 litres per day, which is 50 days of supply per bottle on a 200 litre system.
- The target pH: 6.8 to 7.0 in an aquaponic system, checked in a few minutes.
- How many tests: about 500 with the 30 ml reagent bottle.
- In organic farming: the fertiliser can be used in accordance with Regulations (EU) 2018/848 and 2021/1165.
Organic fertiliser 0-0-4 and a liquid drop pH test for an aquaponic system
This pack brings together the two products that support the day-to-day running of an aquaponics system: a 500 ml bottle of Aquaponic Mix, the organic fertiliser formulated for water that houses fish, and a 30 ml pH drop test, which gives around 500 readings. The first supplies what your fish waste does not provide, while the second tells you whether the water stays within the range where plants, fish and bacteria can live together. You start out with what you need to feed your crops and check your water, without hunting down two separate items.
🐟 The 0-0-4 formula
In a coupled system, the mineralisation of waste releases nitrogen and phosphorus, the two elements that plants consume the most. This is why Aquaponic Mix has an NPK 0-0-4 formula: it adds neither nitrogen nor phosphorus, and it supplies potassium, calcium and chelated trace elements, including iron, manganese, zinc, copper and boron. Very little potassium reaches the system through your fish's feed, while iron becomes poorly available as soon as the pH rises. A standard hydroponics fertiliser, which carries part of its nitrogen in ammoniacal form, would on the contrary work against your biofilter, whose job is precisely to convert ammonium during the nitrogen cycle.
Measure the pH before touching the dose
Yellowing leaves can have several causes, and an iron deficiency may come from a pH that is too high rather than from too little iron being supplied. So take a pH reading before changing anything, then follow it with the iron drop test if the yellowing affects the young leaves. You will then know whether to correct the pH or increase the supply, instead of adding more fertiliser without knowing why.
💧 Dosing and measuring day to day
Aquaponic Mix is dosed at 0.5 ml per 10 litres of water, every day, from the moment your crops are established. The volume to take into account is the water that actually circulates, fish tank and reservoir included, not the capacity shown on the tank. A 200-litre system therefore receives 10 ml per day, so the 500 ml bottle covers 50 days of dosing. On a 500-litre system, the dose rises to 25 ml per day and the same bottle lasts 20 days. Shake it before each use, as the organic matter settles at the bottom, then pour the dose into an area where the water is well agitated, so that it spreads before reaching the roots.
What the fish provide
The mineralisation of waste supplies the nitrogen and phosphorus that your lettuces and tomatoes consume in the greatest quantity.
What the bottle provides
Aquaponic Mix tops up the water with potassium, calcium and chelated trace elements, without disturbing the micro-organisms in the biofilter.
What the test measures
The reagent colours the sample from pH 4.0 to 8.5, a range that covers every state of an aquaponic system.
The target to maintain
A pH of 6.8 to 7.0 suits the plants, the fish and the nitrifying bacteria of the filter alike.
The fertiliser bottle is frost-sensitive
Store the Aquaponic Mix in a dry place, in its original sealed packaging and at 5 to 25 °C: an unheated garden shed is therefore not suitable in winter. Also keep to the prescribed dose, which must not be exceeded, even when the plants seem slow. Recap the pH reagent immediately after each measurement and keep it out of the reach of children.
🧪 Reading the pH correctly
The measurement is taken on a small sample drawn into the test tube supplied, to which you add a few drops of indicator. The colour obtained is then compared with the colour chart printed on the bottle, whose shades are separated by half a pH point, a fine enough resolution to decide on a correction. Always read it in daylight and against a white background, because pink horticultural lighting or a yellow lamp will completely distort the comparison. The test needs no calibration and no battery, and the 30 ml bottle gives about 500 measurements, which is more than a year at one measurement a day. Once opened, it keeps for 5 years, away from light.
📦 What's in the pack
The parcel contains the 500 ml bottle of Aquaponic Mix and the pH drop test, that is, the 30 ml reagent bottle with its colour chart and the reading vial. The fertiliser is approved for use in organic farming under Regulations (EU) 2018/848 and 2021/1165, and it is made in France. When your bottle is empty, the fertiliser is available on its own in bottles and containers from 500 ml to 10 litres, and you carry on with the same daily dose.
