Successful seed starting depends on three conditions: a suitable seed, a medium that holds moisture without suffocating the roots, and enough warmth. The seed packets are heritage, open-pollinated seeds: the Gloire du Dauphiné batavia lettuce, for example, contains 500 non-hybrid seeds that keep for about 3 years somewhere dry, cool and dark. The organic gift sets bring together 6 to 20 varieties per family of vegetables or herbs.

In hydroponics, choose the medium according to the system: peat pods and sponges fit into the 32 mm net pots of towers and NFT channels, while 2 or 2.5 cm rockwool cubes fill the trays. Temperature matters: tomatoes emerge in 6 to 8 days in a medium at 20 to 25 °C, and the heat mat raises the base of the container 5 to 11 °C above room temperature. Sprouters produce sprouts and microgreens, and the HydroCloner roots up to 72 cuttings. If germination fails, the article Germination failure: causes and solutions reviews the causes.
