This JBL aquarium net has a mesh of 0.83 to 1.1 mm: the water passes through it instead of being pushed ahead of it, and the net catches an adult fish more quickly. The net is available from 5.5 to 25 cm, with a 15 cm version on a long handle for deep tanks.

The summary

  • What you receive: a reinforced black nylon net, with a mesh head of 5.5 to 25 cm depending on the size you choose.
  • What it changes: water passes through the mesh instead of being pushed ahead of it, so the net moves faster.
  • Coarse or fine: the coarse mesh is for adult fish only, never for shrimp.
  • What else it catches: a leaf, a piece of plant, leftover food floating on the surface.
  • Which size: a net clearly wider than the fish, and the 41 cm handle for a deep tank.
  • Shipping: a small, light parcel that can be combined with the rest of your order.

Wide-mesh net from 5.5 to 25 cm, which glides through the water to catch an adult fish

The JBL wide-mesh aquarium net is used to catch an adult fish without chasing it: its 0.83 to 1.1 mm mesh lets water pass through the net instead of pushing it ahead, which means you can move faster. The net is available from 5.5 to 25 cm, with a 15 cm version on a 41 cm handle for deep tanks.

A net pushes a mass of water ahead of it, and the fish senses this pressure wave through its lateral line, the sensory organ that runs along its flanks, before the frame even reaches it. With a mesh of 0.83 to 1.1 mm, the water passes through the net instead of being pushed: the landing net moves faster, and the wave the fish feels is much weaker.

📏 Net size

An adult fish turns around in the net, and a net that is too narrow lets it jump over the frame. So choose a net that is clearly wider than the fish: 10 to 15 cm for fish a few centimetres long in a living-room tank, 20 or 25 cm for larger fish and for skimming the surface. The 5.5 and 8 cm nets are mainly for lifting a single fish out of a corner or from among the plants. In a deep tank, the 15 cm version with a 41 cm handle, against 30 cm as standard, reaches the bottom without you having to plunge your arm in. If your tank also houses shrimp or young fry, keep a fine-mesh net alongside, as their antennae and legs catch in a wide mesh.

🪤 Preparing the capture

A capture needs preparing before the net goes into the water. First lower the water level in the tank: a reduced depth of water leaves the fish less room to dodge, and it moves the surface away from the rim of the tank, which limits jumps out of the water. Then, if you can, remove the hollow ornament or the root where it would take refuge, and prepare the receiving container, filled with water from the tank, so that the animal does not experience a change in temperature or water quality during the transfer.

A bucket and a bag ready before you begin

A food-grade bucket with a lid takes the water removed from the tank, which you will put back afterwards, and it also serves as a holding tank for the captured fish. If the fish has to go into another tank, a transport bag filled with tank water waits beside it. The fish thus goes from the net to the water within seconds, without being left in the air while you look for a container.

Next, hold the net still against a wall, and guide the fish towards it with your free hand or with a second net. Lift in one movement once the fish has entered, then close the opening with your hand so that it does not jump out. A catch lasting a few seconds is always better than a ten-minute chase, because a pursued fish injures itself against the decor, and the article on animal welfare in aquaponics explains how stress weakens the fish's immune defences.

Some fish are difficult to catch with a net, whatever the mesh. Corydoras and most catfish have spiny rays on the pectoral and dorsal fins, which snag in the net, as well as barbels that get tangled in it. For these, use the net only to guide the fish into a clear jar or beaker held underwater, then lift it out in that container, so that no mesh touches its fins.

🐟 The fish net in aquaponics

In aquaponics, the net is used first and foremost to catch a fish: to take a closer look at it, to move it from one tank to another, or to spread the fish out better when a tank becomes overstocked. It is also handy for scooping out leaves and floating food waste, or for quickly removing a dead fish, whose decomposition releases ammonia into the water. For adult goldfish in a small system, the 15 cm net is suitable, and the guide to keeping goldfish in aquaponics covers how to look after them; for a deep tank or koi carp, choose a telescopic pond net instead.

Fine, wide or telescopic

Three nets for three situations, from a shrimp nano tank to a garden pond.

Three nets, only one right answer A net that is too small lets the fish jump out, and a net that is too tight pushes a wave ahead of it that the fish can sense. Three questions are enough to decide.
