The summary

  • What you receive: a reinforced black nylon net, with a mesh head of 5.5 to 25 cm depending on the size you choose.
  • What it changes: the 0.35 mm mesh lets nothing snag, neither an antenna nor a fin ray.
  • Fine or coarse: choose the mesh according to the size of what you are lifting out, never the size of the tank.
  • The technique that works: wait for the fish to swim into the net held still, rather than chasing it.
  • Which size: 5.5 or 8 cm for shrimp, 10 to 15 cm for fry, 41 cm handle for a deep tank.
  • Shipping: very light, it goes out as a small tracked parcel.

Landing net with a 0.35 mm mesh, from 5.5 to 25 cm, for shrimp, fry and small fish

The JBL fine-mesh aquarium net is used to lift out shrimps, fry and small fish without hurting them. Its 0.35 mm mesh catches neither antennae nor fin rays. The black nylon net comes in sizes from 5.5 to 25 cm, to be chosen according to the size of the animals, with a 41 cm handle for deep tanks.

A mesh of 0.35 mm lets through neither a fin ray nor a shrimp's antenna. This reinforced black nylon net, available in widths from 5.5 to 25 cm, is therefore intended for anything measuring a few millimetres in an aquarium: shrimp, fry and small fish.

A shrimp should not be lifted out with a coarse-mesh net

Antennae and legs slip through the mesh and stay caught when the animal struggles. A fine net is the only suitable choice for shrimp, fry and long-finned fish, and the wide-mesh version should be kept for adult fish.

🧵 A fine mesh, a slow movement

A fine mesh drags in the water: the net pushes a small wave ahead of it, which the fish senses before it even sees the net. With this net, speed is therefore pointless. The method that works is to hold the net still in a corner, guide the fish towards it with your other hand, and lift in a single movement once it is inside. Allow several minutes for a calm catch, which also spares your plants and your decor.

📏 One net size for each use

The net is chosen according to the animal and the tank. The 5.5 and 8 cm nets slip between plant stems and into the corners of a nano aquarium, where most shrimp live. The 10 to 15 cm nets suit growing fry and the small fish of a living-room tank. The 20 and 25 cm nets cover a larger area, which is useful for skimming off duckweed or guiding a small shoal. In a deep tank, the 15 cm version with a 41 cm handle, against 30 cm for the standard model, lets you reach the bottom without plunging your arm in up to the shoulder.

The fine net is suited first of all to freshwater shrimp, whose legs and antennae would slip through a wider mesh, and then to fry and long-finned fish, whose fins tear on a coarse mesh. Fish whose fins carry spines, or whose barbels catch, are better caught in a clear container that you bring up to them underwater, because their fin rays get snagged in any net.

A floating breeding box to isolate the fry you have caught

The fry and shrimp you lift out with this net often need somewhere safe to stay while they grow or while you observe them. The 3-in-1 floating breeding trap, 20 x 10 cm sits on the surface of the aquarium and keeps these small animals in the tank water, away from the adults. Its dividers allow you to isolate a female ready to give birth, rear fry or keep a fish under observation.

🌱 In aquaponics

In aquaponics, small indoor fish such as guppies often breed in the tank, and the fry are exposed to the adults as well as to the suction of the pump. This net lets you remove them as soon as they appear so you can rear them separately, then put them back once they are large enough. The guide to choosing your fish for aquaponics presents the small species suited to an indoor tank.

🫙 Underwater transfer

Out of the water, the gills of a fish or shrimp dry out quickly, and a small animal sticks to a dry net. So get into the habit of transferring underwater: hold the net, still submerged, over the receiving container, or use a transport bag that you fill with tank water before sliding the animal into it. The net itself should be rinsed in clean water and dried flat, open, so that the mesh does not stick together.

Three nets, three mesh sizes

Choose the mesh according to what you are catching, and the reach according to where you are doing it.

Can't decide between these three nets? A mesh that is too wide lets an antenna catch, while one that is too fine drags in the water and lets leaves through. Answer three questions and the table points you to the right net.
