This whole sphagnum moss holds up to 20 times its weight in water, and keeps the roots constantly moist for cuttings, orchid repotting, terrariums or the greenhouse. It is sold dry and compressed, in 500 g, 1 kg or 4 kg packs.
The summary
- What you receive: dry, compressed sphagnum moss, in 500 g, 1 kg or 4 kg.
- Its particular strength: it holds up to 20 times its own weight in water.
- Preparation: a few hours in clean water, then squeeze it out by hand.
- What it is for: cuttings, repotting orchids and carnivorous plants, terrariums, greenhouses.
- Its character: an acidic material that does not behave like potting compost.
- How it arrives: in a compressed bag, very light for the volume it will make up.
A foam that holds up to 20 times its weight in water, sold by weight
Sphagnum moss, sold dry and compressed in 500 g, 1 kg or 4 kg packs, is used for propagating cuttings, for potting orchids and carnivorous plants, and in terrariums and the greenhouse. It holds up to 20 times its weight in water, which keeps the humidity around the roots constant. A few hours in clean water are enough to prepare it.
Sphagnum holds up to 20 times its weight in water. It is a whole moss, not a crushed grow medium: the stems stay visible and keep their volume once saturated. It is sold by weight, because what matters to you is the water it will hold, not the volume it takes up dry in the bag.
🌊 20 times its weight
Sphagnum leaves carry large, dead, empty cells, known as hyaline cells, which fill with water like so many tiny reservoirs: this is where its water-holding capacity comes from, and it is why the moss soaks up water without compacting. A dry handful fits in the palm of your hand, whereas the same handful rehydrated fills a bowl. You prepare it by leaving it a few hours in clean water, long enough for it to drink fully, then squeezing it out by hand until it no longer drips. Wear gloves to handle it, especially if you have a cut on your hands: sphagnum can transmit sporotrichosis, a skin infection caused by a fungus.
🌿 Cuttings and terrarium plants
Rooting cuttings is its main use. A cutting placed in damp sphagnum finds constant moisture and air at the same time, which few media offer together. Orchids, carnivorous plants and terrarium epiphytes are potted into it for the same reason. If you root cuttings in quantity, the hydroponic cutting propagator meets the same need in a different way. You can also root a cutting of a tropical houseplant in it, such as monstera or pothos, before moving it to its final pot.
Cuttings
Sphagnum keeps constant moisture around the stem, and air at the same time.
Orchids and carnivorous plants
It is used for repotting epiphytic orchids and carnivorous plants, whose roots need moisture without potting compost.
Terrarium and greenhouse
It forms a surface layer that holds in ambient humidity without compacting the grow medium.
Wedge the cutting in place, then feed it
Once the cutting has rooted, the sphagnum moss continues to hold moisture but provides no nutrients. A complete fertiliser added to the watering water then takes over, at a reduced dose while the plant is young. Wedge the cutting into grow baskets or small pots, since the moss cannot hold its shape on its own, and it will then move into its final container without losing its root ball.
An acidic material, and a water circuit
Sphagnum is acidic by nature, and that is exactly what suits epiphytes and carnivorous plants. In a flood-and-drain bed or a floating-raft tank, this character and these long fibres have no place: the material heads for the strainer and its acidity upsets a pH that you are managing for the fish as much as for the plants. Keep it for your pots, your terrariums and your cuttings grown outside the system.
🪴 Layering and hanging planters
Air layering makes a branch root before it is separated from the mother plant. You cut into the bark over a few centimetres, wrap the wound in a ball of damp sphagnum moss, then enclose it in plastic film sealed at both ends so that it does not dry out. Roots form in the moss within a few weeks, and you cut the branch below the root ball as soon as they are visible through the film. The same moss is also used to line the inside of an open-work hanging basket, where it holds the potting compost and keeps moisture around the roots.
🧺 Three sizes, one single foam
The material is identical in all three bags, only the weight changes. The 500 g bag covers a few cuttings and one repotting, the kilo lasts a season of terrarium or orchid work, and the 4 kg bag is for anyone who repots in bulk or fills an entire greenhouse. Because dry moss compresses a great deal, the same weight takes up a very different volume before and after rehydration. An opened bag can be resealed and kept dry: dry moss keeps without deteriorating and can be rehydrated on the day you need it.
📅 The moss month by month
In a pot, sphagnum holds water far longer than bark or compost. So water when the surface begins to feel dry to the touch, rather than on a fixed day, otherwise the roots sit in a waterlogged medium. Water low in salts, rainwater or reverse-osmosis water, suits carnivorous plants best, as their roots tolerate dissolved salts poorly. Over time the moss slowly breaks down and compacts, so that it holds too much water: repotting into fresh sphagnum, generally every 1 to 2 years for an orchid, then gives the roots the air they need.

delivery time
Your estimate
It covers preparing your order and then the transit time quoted by the carrier, counted in working days.
It is not a guaranteed delivery date: public holidays, peak periods, customs or a carrier delay can extend it. The exact amount, in your currency, is worked out in the cart once your address is entered.
The foam travels dry and compressed, which keeps the parcel light for the volume it will take up once rehydrated. The exact charges are shown in your basket once you have entered your address.
