19 L DWC hydroponic pot with air pump
This 19 L double-walled pot grows a single plant without soil, with its own air pump. The bubbler version sits the roots in an oxygenated solution, while the watering ring version waters them continuously through a large basket of clay pebbles.
The summary
- What it is: a self-contained 19 L pot, with its air pump, for growing a large plant without soil.
- Two versions: roots immersed in an oxygenated solution, or watered continuously by a drip ring.
- Its dimensions: 33 cm high, 30 cm in diameter, black and white double wall.
- Your part: topping up the level, and renewing the solution every 7 to 14 days.
Self-contained 19 L grow pot, air pump included, for a single large plant
This 19 L pot grows a single plant without soil, from germination to harvest, with its own air pump and no fitting to assemble. The reservoir, lid, basket and pump form a complete set, which you place on a growing table, at the back of a grow tent or under a greenhouse. The wall is moulded in two layers, black on the inside so that light does not reach the solution, and white on the outside to reflect that of the lamps, which limits both algae growth and the warming of the solution.
🫧 Two ways to feed the roots
The air-stone version uses classic deep water culture. The plant sits in a 12 cm basket filled with clay pebbles, and its roots reach down into the nutrient solution that fills the pot. The 78 L/h air pump runs continuously into a porous stone placed at the bottom, and its fine bubbles keep up the dissolved oxygen that the submerged roots need to breathe. It is the simplest set-up to understand and run, and the one best suited to a first trial.
The watering ring version works differently. The plant roots in a large 20 cm basket, which holds about 4.5 litres of clay pebbles, and the same air pump lifts the solution from the reservoir up to a ring placed on the grow medium. The ring spreads it drop by drop over the pebbles, then it falls back into the reservoir, in a continuous loop. The roots thus find air between the pebbles as well as solution, which makes this setup less sensitive to a solution that warms up and suits it to large plants, in a greenhouse as well as indoors.
Place the air pump above the water level
Place the air pump higher than the surface of the solution, on a shelf or a stand, rather than on the floor next to the pot. In a power cut, a pump placed lower lets the solution run back down the air line to it, which can damage it and empty part of the pot onto the floor. A non-return valve fitted on the air line gives you the same protection when the pump has to stay down low.
Complete nutrition for the first fill
The pot's 19 L are prepared with a complete nutrient solution, and the three-part hydroponic fertiliser kit is available in a formula for soft water and one for hard water. Its three bottles are dosed separately according to the plant's growth stage, richer in nitrogen during growth, richer in potassium and phosphorus at flowering. You can thus adapt the solution as the crop develops, instead of keeping the same dose from planting to harvest.
📏 The level tube
A tube fitted to the side of the pot connects to the reservoir and shows you the level of the solution without lifting the lid or disturbing the roots. Depending on the size of the plant and the heat, the 19 L represent 5 to 10 days of consumption, and it is this tube that tells you when to top up. It also serves to drain the reservoir when you renew the solution, every 7 to 14 days, which saves you from tipping a pot that weighs nearly 20 kg when full.
🐟 Using water from a fish tank
The principle behind this pot, roots sitting in oxygenated water, is the same as that of the floating raft ponds used in aquaponics, so it lends itself to a trial using water from a fish tank. Two differences then matter. The pH can no longer be adjusted freely, because that of the fish and the filter bacteria comes first. Fish-tank water also often lacks enough iron and potassium for a fruiting plant, so a supplementary feed becomes necessary, which you can monitor on the young leaves with the help of the guide to iron deficiency in aquaponics. For a single plant, this trial shows you how your vegetables react to the water from your tank before you expand the system.
📦 What's in the box
Both versions share the 19 L pot with its lid, the air pump, the level tube and a cube of rock wool to start a seedling or a cutting. The bubbler version adds its 12 cm basket, an air stone with 1 m of air tubing and clay pebbles. The ring version adds its 20 cm basket and the watering ring, and its clay pebbles are ordered separately.
