Set of 50 hydroponic growing baskets: Ø 3.5 cm to 13 cm
These black, slotted growing baskets come in eleven sizes, from 3.5 to 13 cm in diameter at the rim, and are sold in packs of 50. From vertical towers to bucket lids, choose the size whose rim is just wider than the hole in your support: each size has its own dimensions for rim, opening, base and height.
The summary
- What you receive: 50 black slotted baskets, all in the size you have chosen.
- The sizes: eleven rim diameters, from 3.5 to 13 cm, with heights from 3.5 to 8.5 cm.
- How to choose: according to the hole in your support, slightly narrower than the rim of the basket.
- The detailed dimensions: opening, base and height of each size, from 2.35 to 10 cm of opening.
Eleven diameters from 3.5 to 13 cm, in packs of 50 slotted baskets
These black slotted baskets come in eleven sizes, from 3.5 to 13 cm in rim diameter, and are sold in lots of 50 identical baskets. They hold the plant by their rim, let the roots out through the slots and through the base, and seal the hole in the support so that light does not reach the nutrient solution. That last function determines how clean your system stays, since a solution exposed to light turns green.
📏 The hole determines the size
You choose a basket first by the hole in its support, then by the plant it will hold. The body must sit down into the cut-out while the rim rests on top of it, so the hole needs to be slightly narrower than the rim, by around 5 mm to 1 cm depending on the size. Take a steel rule, measure the cut-out at its widest point, then choose the diameter whose rim is just above it. If you are cutting the hole yourself, do the opposite: choose the basket first, then the hole saw.
🪴 Eleven sizes, three uses
The small sizes, from 3.5 to 5 cm, are intended for closely drilled supports: vertical towers, cutting plates, jar lids, and anything that starts out in a germination sponge. The medium sizes, from 6 to 7 cm, suit gutters and rafts: they take a rockwool cube and carry a lettuce through to harvest. The large sizes, from 8.5 to 13 cm, sit in bucket and tub lids for deep water culture, where a plant stays for several months and develops a proper root mass. Two sizes come in two heights, the 4.5 cm and the 6 cm: the shallow version suits supports with little depth, while the tall one holds moisture better.
Germination sponge
It fills the small sizes, since it slips whole into a 3.5 to 5 cm basket and holds the seed in place.
Rockwool cube
The 36 mm cube fits snugly in the 5 cm pot and sits comfortably from the 6 cm upwards.
Clay balls
They wedge an already established root ball in the larger sizes. Choose a size bigger than the openings.
Coconut fiber
Used on its own, it lets its fines pass through the open bottom, and these end up in the circuit's pump.
Fill with grow medium rather than soil, whatever the size
In the smaller sizes, a germination sponge fills the basket in one piece. In the larger ones, place the cube or sponge in the centre and wedge it all around with rinsed clay pebbles. Sow two seeds per support, keep the stronger one, then put the whole thing in the basket as soon as the root shows through the bottom.
The basket that falls through
A rim smaller than the hole will not hold: the basket tilts or slips into the solution, often a few days after being set up, when the plant gains weight. Conversely, a body wider than the hole will not go down, and the basket stays perched there with its roots never reaching the water. Measure the cut-out before ordering a batch, and compare it with the rim diameter as well as the opening of the size you are aiming for.
One pack contains 50 baskets of the same size, supplied nested together. Allow one basket per position on your support, then keep the rest in reserve: a basket sometimes cracks when a well-rooted plug is removed, and a hole left open lets light into the solution and encourages algae. Positions you are not yet growing in also need a blanking basket, filled with clay pebbles. If your set-up mixes two supports, buy one pack per size rather than a compromise between the two.
🌱 What grows depending on the size
If you grow plants with fibrous roots and a short cycle, they are happy with the small and medium sizes: lettuce, rocket, lamb's lettuce, spinach, basil, parsley, chives and coriander finish their cycle without trouble. Plants kept for a long time, such as chard, cabbages, strawberries or perennial herbs, do better in a 7 or 8.5 cm pot. Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers grown through to fruiting need the large sizes, from 10 to 13 cm, and a stake fixed to the structure rather than to the rim. Taproot plants, carrots and beetroot above all, belong in no basket.
♻️ Cleaning between crops
A basket will serve for several seasons provided you restore it to like-new condition between crops, and the guide to choosing pots and baskets compares the materials that last. Cut the roots flush with the base rather than pulling on those caught in the slots, because pulling is what cracks the plastic at the rim. The emptied baskets then soak overnight, and a soft brush removes the brown deposit from the walls, a biofilm that can harbour the spores of root-rot pathogens from one crop to the next. A rinse in vinegar water finishes the cleaning.
Storage requires no special precautions, as polypropylene is unaffected by dryness or cold, and the baskets nest together to take up very little space. A basket should be replaced when its rim is cracked, when a slot has widened to the point of letting the filling through, or when the plastic has whitened and hardened after several summers in full sun, which is rare indoors.
