Sinking pellet with 38% protein, for fancy goldfish and round-bodied varieties
This sinking granule is designed for round-bodied goldfish, such as veiltails and similar varieties, from 3 to 20 cm depending on size, kept in a cold-water aquarium. Its label declares 38% protein, 8% fat, 4% fibre and 11% crude ash, and the recipe contains no added colourings.
🥣 The pellet recipe
Salmon meal heads the list of ingredients, followed by wheat germ, shrimp meal, soya meal and rice flour. Spirulina, spinach and Mediterranean herbs complete the recipe, along with yeast extract and guar gum, which keeps the pellet intact in the water. The food is enriched with vitamins A, D3, E and C. As it sinks through the water column, your fish take it as they swim, which means in return that you need to keep an eye on what reaches the bottom.
It sinks
Your fish take it in mid-water or near the bottom, without having to come up to the surface for it.
Pigments
The pigments come from krill and spirulina, not from a colouring added to the recipe.
The size
The Grano S is aimed at fish of 3 to 10 cm, the Grano M at those of 8 to 20 cm; the recipe is identical.
The doser
The 100 ml and 250 ml tubs have a click-action dosing lid, which dispenses the same amount with every press.
🧹 What is left on the bottom
A sinking pellet is lost more easily than a floating one. What falls between two pebbles escapes the fish and breaks down on the spot, without you seeing it. So give 1 to 2 times a day the amount eaten in a few minutes, then look at the bottom of the tank 5 minutes later. If any pellets are left, remove them with a fine-mesh net and reduce the next dose, because leftovers that break down raise the ammonium level in the water.
Monitoring a goldfish tank
An adult goldfish eats a lot and produces waste accordingly, which puts the filter to the test long before the water turns cloudy. The NH4 ammonium water test gives you the first warning, because the ammonium level rises before anything else when a ration is too generous. The suction-cup thermometer completes the picture, since warmer water speeds up digestion and therefore waste output.
The 100 ml tub, available in Grano S and Grano M, lets you check that your fish accept the feed or feed a small tank of young fish. The 250 ml tub, with its click dispenser, suits an aquarium with a few fish, while the 1000 ml tub holds about 580 g of pellets, for a more heavily stocked tank or several tanks. Once opened, the tub should be used within 4 months, as air and humidity gradually degrade the vitamins. So choose the size according to what your fish will eat in 4 months, and close the lid after every meal, keeping the tub dry.
🌾 The goldfish in aquaponics
The goldfish is one of the temperate-water species most commonly kept in small aquaponic systems, because it tolerates a wide range of temperatures. The nitrogen from the feed's protein, which makes up 38% of it, is largely released into the water as ammonium, which the filter bacteria convert into nitrate, then taken up by the plants. The ration you adjust therefore sets the nitrogen supply to the crops just as much as the quality of the fish's water. The guide to goldfish in aquaponics and the one on the nitrogen cycle describe how this works in detail.
