JBL ProTemp Cooler cooling fan for aquariums, 60 to 300 L
The JBL ProTemp Cooler clips onto the edge of the tank and blows across the water surface. The evaporation it causes lowers the temperature by 2 to 4 °C, enough to get through a hot spell without stressing the fish. The x200 suits tanks of 60 to 200 L and the x300 those of 90 to 300 L; the optional CoolControl thermostat switches it on automatically above the chosen temperature.
The summary
- Which model: x200 up to 200 L, x300 up to 300 L.
- The temperature drop: 2 to 4 °C.
- The thermostat: optional, for automatic switch-on.
- Evaporation: a level that needs topping up more often.
A 12 V fan that lowers the tank temperature by 2 to 4 °C
When summer settles in, the water in your indoor tank follows the temperature of the room and often rises above 28 °C by late afternoon. Warm water holds less oxygen, yet fish use more of it. The JBL ProTemp Cooler blows across the water surface and triggers evaporation, which carries heat away, so the temperature drops by 2 to 4 °C for just 3 or 4 W. It does not replace a chiller, but it is enough in most homes during heatwaves.
🌬️ Cooling by evaporation
To evaporate, water needs energy, which it takes from the remaining body of water: it is the same principle as the cool sensation on wet skin in a strong wind. The ProTemp Cooler's cross-flow fan, 10 cm wide on the x200 and 18.5 cm on the x300, spreads a steady airflow across the full width of the surface. The effect is stronger the drier the air in your room; in a very humid room, the drop comes closer to 2 °C.
You attach it with a clip to the edge of the tank, or to a pane up to 2.4 cm thick, and it swivels through 360° to direct the flow. A grille protects fingers and any fish that might jump. It runs on 12 V, from a universal power supply, with a 150 cm cable: no mains current reaches above the water. This second generation has improved, quieter bearings.
Top up evaporation with conditioned water
Cooling works through evaporation, so the level in your tank drops faster than usual. Top it up regularly with water at the tank's temperature, treated with a conditioner such as Easy-Life AquaMaker, because tap water added as it is brings chlorine to the fish and to the filter bacteria.
📏 Which model to choose
The volume of your tank decides: the x200 covers tanks of 60 to 200 litres, the x300 those of 90 to 300 litres. Take an aquaponics fish tank of 150 litres, standing in a living room where the air reaches 30 °C in July, with water at 29 °C. The x200 brings it down to around 25 to 27 °C during the hot hours, a range that suits guppies and that goldfish tolerate during the hot hours. For a 250-litre tank, or for a 150-litre tank in a very hot conservatory, the x300 and its wider fan give more margin.
Reading the fan's effect on a thermometer
The fan lowers the temperature by a few degrees, and only a thermometer shows you by how much in your tank. A JBL suction-cup aquarium thermometer, stuck to the opposite pane, lets you track the water through the day. You then know whether to switch the fan off in the evening, and whether the CoolControl thermostat would save you from doing it by hand.
The fan is switched on when the heat arrives and unplugged in autumn. In midsummer, leave it running during the hot hours: if the water temperature falls too low at night, switch it off in the evening. If your tank is closed with a solid lid, evaporation is blocked: open a hatch or remove the glass cover beneath the fan. Dust the grille from time to time, to keep the airflow steady. The JBL CoolControl thermostat, offered as an option with the fan, automates this adjustment: it starts the fan as soon as the water exceeds the chosen temperature, between 18 and 36 °C, and stops it when it drops back below that value. Its probe attaches inside the tank with a suction cup, on a 90 cm cable, and it is powered from the fan's 12 V adapter.
The fan complements the other measures against heat. Close the room's shutters during the hot hours, move your tank away from a sunny window and shorten the lighting period, as lamps also warm the water. Feed a little less: excess food decomposes and consumes oxygen. Boost the aeration with an air pump, since warm water holds less dissolved oxygen. If the temperature stays above what your fish can tolerate despite the fan, a chiller takes over by holding the temperature you set, whatever the heat in the room.
🌱 In aquaponics
In indoor aquaponics, your fish tank is subject to the same summer heat as an aquarium, with one extra constraint: the dissolved oxygen is shared by the fish, the nitrifying bacteria in the filter and the plant roots. Warm water holds less of it, while each of them uses more as the temperature rises. The fan keeps the water a few degrees cooler during hot spells, for just a few watts, before a chiller becomes necessary. The article on looking after your aquaponic system in summer gathers together the other steps for the season.
