Above-ground W-shaped gutter for growing slabs, 185 mm
This W-shaped off-ground gutter takes coco fibre or rockwool slabs watered by drip irrigation: its central platform keeps the slab out of the water, and its two channels carry the leachate to the drain. It comes in 1 m and 2 m lengths, with its joining and drain fittings.
The summary
- What it is: a PVC gutter with a W-shaped profile, 185 mm wide, which holds a growing plug and collects its drainage.
- The parts: the 1 m or 2 m gutter, the joining fitting and the drain fitting with a 25 mm outlet.
- Assembling a line: one gutter, a drain fitting at each end, and a joint between two lengths.
- How it arrives: the 2 m gutter travels as a long parcel, delivered to your door.
185 mm PVC profile that holds the blocks of grow medium and drains off surplus watering
Growing on blocks, that is, on a block of grow medium laid flat and watered by drip irrigation, calls for a support that holds the block level and drains the water passing through it. This W-shaped soilless gutter, in non-toxic PVC, fulfils both roles over a length of 1 or 2 m. It measures 185 mm wide at the top by 65 mm high, and you can lay coconut fibre blocks or rockwool blocks in it equally well.
📐 The W profile
Seen in cross-section, the bottom of the gutter is not flat. A raised central platform carries the plug, while two lower channels run along each side for the full length, which creates the W shape that gives the profile its name. The irrigation water that the grow medium has not retained, known as leachate, leaves from underneath the plug, drops into these channels and flows towards the end of the line instead of stagnating under the roots. The roots of your plants therefore keep their access to air, and the plug never sits in a puddle.
💧 Drip irrigation and drainage
In hydroponics on coco coir or rock wool, each plant receives its nutrient solution through a dripper pushed into the block, in several waterings a day. You water slightly more than the grow medium retains, so as to renew the water in the block and stop salts building up in it: it is this surplus that the gutter collects. Fit it with a slight slope towards the end that carries the drain fitting, whose 25 mm sleeve connects to a pipe leading to a collection can or back to the reservoir. To lengthen the line, the joining fitting links two gutters end to end, and the submersible pump, 600 L/h with adjustable flow, feeds a network of drippers from a reservoir.
Watering a first line without a power socket
If you are starting out with just a few plants, the automatic solar irrigation kit provides all the watering for one row of grow blocks. Its pump draws from a bucket or a jerrycan, and it comes with 15 m of pipe and 15 drippers that can each be adjusted individually. You push one dripper into each block beside the plant, then choose one of the 12 preset cycles, and the solar panel does the rest.
In aquaponics, the solution reaching the drippers is the pond water, loaded with the nitrates that bacteria produce from the fish waste. This water also carries fine particles that clog the small orifices, so mechanical filtration upstream of the pump protects your drippers. The leachate collected through the drain fitting can then return to the pond through a pipe, and the circuit stays closed, with no water lost. A drop-based pH test then lets you monitor the water coming back from the grow bags.
The drain fitting goes at the lowest point
Place the open drain fitting at the lowest end of the line, and close the other end with a second drain fitting fitted with its plug. Make each part watertight with silicone or PVC adhesive, then run clean water through the empty gutter before placing the grow blocks. Any leak can be spotted and fixed at that point, with no grow medium or plants to move.
📦 The parts included in the order
Each part is ordered individually in the selector: the 1 m gutter, the 2 m gutter, the joining fitting and the drain fitting, the latter being supplied with the cap that closes its outlet. For a 2 m line, you therefore need one 2 m gutter and two drain fittings, one of which is closed by its cap at the high end. The grow medium slabs are chosen separately, and the coco fibre in a 50 L bag fills the starter pots before they are placed on the slab.
