Liquid phosphorus supplement for flowering
CANNA Mono Phosphore is a liquid phosphorus supplement rated at 20% P2O5. It corrects a phosphorus deficiency or supports the flowering of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and strawberries, at 10 to 20 ml per 10 litres of nutrient solution, in hydroponics, in coco fibre or in soil.
The summary
- The content: a liquid single-nutrient product containing 20% P2O5, or about 8.7% phosphorus.
- How much to add: 10 to 20 ml per 10 litres of solution, i.e. 1 to 2 ml per litre.
- The two uses: when a deficiency appears or when fruiting vegetables come into flower, as a supplement to the fertiliser.
- And aquaponics: to correct a decoupled growing loop, never the fish water.
Phosphorus alone, to support flowering or correct a deficiency
CANNA Mono Phosphore is a liquid supplement containing 20% P2O5 that corrects a phosphorus deficiency or supports flowering. It is added to the base fertiliser at 10 to 20 ml per 10 litres; PK 13/14 takes over when potassium is lacking as well. It never goes into the fish circuit of an aquaponic system.
A plant lacking phosphorus grows slowly, develops few roots and flowers poorly. Its older leaves turn dark green, then take on purplish tinges on their undersides, a sign that the element is leaving the older organs to move to the young shoots. CANNA Mono Phosphore supplies this element on its own, in liquid form, so that you can correct a deficiency or support flowering without altering the rest of your feeding.
🔬 Phosphorus in the plant
Phosphorus plays a central role in the plant's energy balance: it is part of the molecules that store and carry energy, of the cell membranes and of the genetic material. It also influences flowering and the production of secondary compounds, which include some of the aromas. It is a mobile element, which the plant moves towards its growing organs when it runs short, hence the first symptoms appearing on the lower leaves of your plants. The product contains 20% P2O5, or roughly 8.7% phosphorus expressed as the pure element.
This bottle belongs to the CANNA range of single-nutrient products, highly soluble liquid minerals that the plant can absorb directly. They are made from the same raw materials as the range's base fertilisers and remain compatible with them. Mono Phosphore serves two purposes: making up for a phosphorus shortage, and boosting flowering through a supplementary feed. When potassium is lacking as well, PK 13/14 supplies both elements together, and Mono Potassium corrects potassium on its own. On your fruiting vegetables, the moment when the first flower clusters form is when an occasional feed makes the most sense.
Monitor the solution before and after each adjustment
A single-nutrient product is dosed into a solution you already know, otherwise you are correcting blind. A pocket pH and EC tester shows you the conductivity of the base solution and then that obtained after the addition. This way you check that the pH stays within the range where phosphorus is best absorbed, and that the correction has not overloaded the solution.
Purplish leaves
A purple tinge under the older leaves signals insufficient or poorly absorbed phosphorus.
Flower initiation
Tomatoes, peppers and aubergines form their first flowers and consume more of it.
Slow-growing young plants
Weak rooting despite good water can come from a lack of phosphorus.
Too much phosphorus blocks other elements
Too much phosphorus stops the plant from absorbing potassium, calcium and several trace elements, and causes fresh deficiencies. Start with the low dose, watch the new leaves for a week, and only increase if the need is confirmed.
Nutrients interact with one another, and phosphorus is no exception. Unlike an excess of phosphorus, an excess of iron hinders the absorption of phosphates, so the deficiency you observe may come from a solution that is too rich in iron rather than from a genuine shortage. Concentrated calcium also forms insoluble salts with phosphates, which precipitate out. This is why each single-nutrient product is added to the water separately, stirring between additions, and never as a concentrate in the same container as a calcium supplement.
💧 Preparing and dosing
First prepare your usual nutrient solution with the base fertiliser, then add 10 to 20 ml of Mono Phosphore per 10 litres, a dilution of between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 500. Mix, check the conductivity, then adjust the pH. For a first correction, stay at the low dose and watch how the leaves that form over the following days respond, as those already marked will not turn green again. The product is suitable for hydroponics, coco coir and soil, alongside the fertiliser suited to each of these grow media.
🐟 Phosphorus and aquaponics
The water in an aquaponic system often contains less phosphorus than a conventional hydroponic solution, since everything the plants receive comes from the fish feed. Fruiting vegetables, which are more demanding than salad crops, may then flower without setting fruit properly. Even so, Mono Phosphore should not be poured into the water of a coupled circuit: it is dosed for a solution without fish, and an excess of phosphorus in water exposed to light encourages algae to proliferate. In your circuit, keeping the pH between 6 and 7 remains the first lever, because phosphorus precipitates with calcium as soon as the pH rises.
This single-nutrient product, on the other hand, finds its place in decoupled aquaponics. The fish water feeds a separate growing loop that never returns to the pond, and the plant solution can then be corrected element by element, which is precisely what a phosphorus-only supplement allows. You can also use it on fruiting vegetables grown in pots or in coco fibre alongside the system. The article on deficiencies in aquaponics helps you tell a phosphorus shortage from other imbalances.
📦 One bottle for several seasons
The one-litre bottle treats 500 to 1,000 litres of solution depending on the dose chosen. As the product is used occasionally, for a correction or during flowering, it lasts you several seasons for a family vegetable garden or a domestic-sized hydroponic system. A 50-litre sump tank takes 50 to 100 ml per batch, which leaves at least ten full corrections from a single bottle.
Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from frost, heat and light, and out of the reach of children. Measure each of your doses with a measuring cup or graduated syringe kept for this purpose, and rinse them after every use, so that the concentrated phosphorus never comes into contact with another product, in particular a calcium supplement.
