  • Dose and frequency: 40 ml per 10 litres of water, one to three times a week.
  • When: from the first flowers, following on from the Bio Vega growth formula.
  • Alongside the system: for tomatoes and strawberries in soil-filled pots, never in the fish water.

Fermented plant-based fertiliser for tomatoes, peppers and strawberries grown in soil

BIOCANNA Bio Flores, an organic flowering fertiliser certified organic, feeds tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and strawberries grown in soil. It takes over from Bio Vega at the first flowers, at 40 ml per 10 litres, one to three times a week. Sold from 500 ml to 10 L, it must not be poured into the pond or the aquaponic beds.

When a tomato plant or a strawberry plant starts to flower, its needs change: it now devotes its resources to the flowers, and then to the fruit they bear. Bio Flores is the flowering fertiliser of the BIOCANNA organic range, made from fermented plant matter and certified for use in organic farming. It is intended for fruiting vegetables grown in soil or fertile potting compost, in pots or in the vegetable garden, and takes over from the Bio Vega growth formula as soon as the first flowers appear.

An organic fertiliser does not work quite like a mineral fertiliser. Part of its elements is in a form that roots cannot absorb as it is: it is the soil micro-organisms that break it down and mineralise it, that is, convert it into dissolved ions, before the plant takes it up. This is why this type of fertiliser gives its best results in living soil or a compost rich in organic matter, where this microbial life is active, and why it is poorly suited to recirculating hydroponic systems.

🍃 A certified plant-based formula

Origin

Fermented plant materials, which supply minerals in balanced proportions.

Betaine

A plant-derived compound present in the formula, with a range of amino acids.

Certification

Approved for use in organic farming, under the Control Union and OMRI labels.

The dose is 40 ml per 10 litres of water, a dilution of 1 in 250. You water once to three times a week depending on the volume of the pot and the size of the plant, on a fertile soil or potting compost, wetting the whole volume of grow medium. The diluted solution does not need to be acidified, which makes watering in the vegetable garden simpler. Prepare it fresh each day and use it within 24 hours, because a diluted organic solution quickly becomes a favourable medium for micro-organisms. Conductivity is not used to manage this fertiliser: its elements are bound to the organic matter, so an EC reading does not reflect the dose applied. Only very hard water, above pH 7.5, calls for a pH correction.

Draining the bottom of tomato pots

An organic fertiliser needs an airy potting soil, where soil life can breathe, and a potted tomato quickly suffers from a waterlogged base. A layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of your large pots drains off excess water and keeps the roots dry at depth. Bio Flores, applied one to three times a week, then feeds a medium that stays alive all summer.

Shake the bottle and keep it in the shade

Shake the bottle before each use to resuspend the sediment. Keep it closed, in a dark place away from frost, and out of the reach of children. Even if organic, a fertiliser applied beyond the recommended dose harms the plant and the life of the soil: stick to 40 ml per 10 litres.

Bio Flores suits all crops grown for fruit or flowers: tomatoes of every size in large pots, peppers and chillies, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries in planters, nasturtiums and marigolds with edible flowers. With drip irrigation, flushing the pipes with clean water after each feed stops them from clogging. For your plants, a well-drained light potting compost and a pot that is large enough matter as much as the fertiliser when it comes to a steady harvest throughout the season.

You switch from Bio Vega to Bio Flores when the first flowers open, keeping the same watering frequency. On a tomato, that is when the first truss flowers; on a pepper, the first white flowers in the leaf axils; on strawberry plants already in flower when you buy them, Bio Flores can be used straight away. Plants grown for their leaves, such as lettuces or herbs, do not need a flowering fertiliser, since they are harvested before they flower.

🐟 Organic matter and fish water

Organic does not mean compatible with an aquaponic system. In the fish water, any decomposing organic matter uses up dissolved oxygen, which the fish and the nitrifying bacteria in the filter need to keep above 5 mg per litre. Bio Flores must therefore not be poured into the tank or into a grow bed connected to the circuit. The fruiting vegetables in your system already get their nitrogen from the fish feed, converted into nitrates by nitrification.

What they most often lack is potassium, the limiting element in aquaponics, along with iron and calcium. To correct these, choose products designed for water that houses fish, such as the Aquaponic Mix organic fertiliser, which supplies potassium and chelated trace elements without upsetting the biofilter. Bio Flores keeps its place alongside the system: the tomatoes, peppers or strawberries you grow in pots of compost on the terrace, particularly if you garden according to the rules of organic farming.

📦 From 500 ml to 10 litres

Bio Flores comes in a 500 ml bottle, a 1 litre bottle and 5 and 10 litre cans. At 40 ml per 10 litres, the 500 ml bottle makes up 125 litres of watering solution, enough to look after a few potted tomato plants for part of the summer, and the litre makes up 250. The 5 and 10 litre cans, which make up 1,250 and 2,500 litres, suit raised-bed vegetable gardens and family greenhouses. Measure the dose with a graduated measure rather than the bottle cap, and mix only as much water as you will use that day.
