Tropical Carnivore granules for carnivorous fish and cichlids
Two Tropical foods feed carnivorous fish: Carnivore, a sinking pellet for large bottom-dwelling carnivores, and Cichlid Carnivore Pellet, a floating astaxanthin pellet for carnivorous cichlids. They are sold from the 250 ml tub to the 5 L bucket.
The summary
- Which food: sinking Carnivore or floating Cichlid Carnivore.
- What's in them: 46 to 50% protein depending on the food.
- Who they suit: large bottom-feeding carnivores or carnivorous cichlids.
- The 5 L buckets: about 1.8 kg, for large tanks.
Sinking or floating pellets, rich in animal protein, for carnivorous fish
Carnivorous fish do not feed in the same way as omnivores: their diet is based on animal protein, and a food loaded with cereals fattens them without meeting their needs. Two Tropical foods are designed for them, and they differ mainly in where they stay in the water. Carnivore sinks, for the large bottom hunters, while Cichlid Carnivore Pellet floats, for carnivorous cichlids that hunt by sight.
⚓ The Carnivore, which sinks
Carnivore contains 48% protein, 7% fat, 2.5% fibre and 8% moisture, with little starch and beta-glucan, a yeast compound that stimulates natural defences. Its pellets sink and do not break down: they stay whole on the bottom until your fish find them. It is intended for large carnivores that hunt by smell near the bottom, such as freshwater stingrays, eels, catfish or snakeheads, often active at night, so it is best given at the end of the day, near their hiding places.
🐟 The Cichlid Carnivore Pellet
Cichlid Carnivore Pellet is a floating pellet made from fish and shellfish, enriched with astaxanthin at 80 mg per kilo, a pigment that intensifies reds and oranges. It is aimed at medium and large carnivorous cichlids, such as Astronotus, which react quickly to prey at the surface. The medium 3 mm pellet contains 46% protein and 6% fat; the small pellet, at 50% protein, suits smaller mouths and young fish. For omnivorous cichlids, Tropical Cichlid Gran is the staple feed from the same range.
A test kit for a tank of carnivores
A very high-protein food produces a lot of ammonium, and a tank of large carnivores calls for generous filtration. The 6-in-1 water analysis kit, in its ammonium version, brings together the tests for pH, KH, nitrite, nitrate and ammonium. This lets you track, week by week, whether your filter is coping with the ration you feed.
Live prey can transmit parasites
Live fish of doubtful origin, given as food, often introduce parasites and diseases into the tank. A complete dry food, supplemented from time to time with quality frozen food, meets the needs of your carnivores without this risk.
Used to live or frozen prey, carnivores sometimes accept a dry food poorly at first. To bring them round, you can mix a few pellets into their usual food, then increase the proportion of pellets over 1 to 2 weeks. A well-fed carnivore can go 1 or 2 days without eating: do not force the ration when appetite drops, but check the water quality if the drop lasts. Growing juveniles eat more often than adults, with 2 to 3 small meals a day, compared with a single, larger meal for big specimens.
🍽️ Dosing without overloading
Carnivores feed greedily, and their waste weighs heavily on the water. Give small portions, sized to what is eaten within a few minutes, then remove whatever is left, because the nitrogen in uneaten protein turns into ammonium, as explained in the article on the nitrogen cycle. The 5 L buckets, which hold about 1.8 kg of pellets, are intended for tanks of 400 litres and over and for fish farms. They keep best sealed, dry and cool: decant a few weeks' portion into a small airtight container and keep the bucket closed the rest of the time, which preserves the vitamins.
