50 L coco fibre, natural or with perlite
Coco fibre is a soilless grow medium that retains water like a sponge whilst allowing air to pass through. This 50 L bag can be opened and used straight away.
You can choose between two compositions. The natural fibre retains more water, while the fibre blended with a quarter perlite drains more quickly.
The summary
- What it is: a 50 L bag of coco coir, a clean soilless grow medium that you simply open and pour.
- Two compositions: natural coir holds more water, while coir blended with a quarter perlite drains faster.
- You control the nutrition: you add fertiliser at every watering, using a formula designed for coco coir.
- Reusable: you rinse the grow medium between crops and start again for another cycle, 3 times in all.
- Bag weight: it weighs 12.5 kg in natural coir and 10.6 kg with perlite, which is lighter.
- pH: it is your nutrient solution that sets the pH of the crop, and you measure it on the drainage water.
Growing medium 50 L, natural coconut fibre or with perlite
Coco fibre is a by-product of the coconut industry, and has become one of the main soilless growing media in place of peat. It holds water like a sponge while still letting air through, it breaks down slowly, and producing it does not require draining a peat bog. This 50 L bag can be opened and poured as it is, without rinsing, as pure fibre or mixed with a quarter perlite.
💧 Water and air in the pot
A root needs water and oxygen at the same time, and the structure of coco fibre provides both. Its fibres hold water available for hours while leaving air passages between them. You can water a fibre that has dried out without it repelling the water, unlike dried-out peat, and you supply the nutrition in the irrigation water, which leaves you in control of what the plant receives at each stage of its growth.
🪴 Natural or with perlite
Retention
The fibre behaves like a sponge. It keeps water available for a long time and tolerates a forgotten watering better.
Aeration
The fibre lets air through as long as it is not packed down. A compressed grow medium loses this advantage.
Nutrition
You add the fertiliser to the watering water, and you adjust the formula to the plant's growth stage.
Reuse
The fibre can be reused over 3 growing cycles. Between cycles, a thorough rinse returns it to its original state.
Perlite is an expanded volcanic rock, in the form of white, porous, incompressible beads. Mixed in at a quarter, it stops the fibre from compacting and keeps pockets of air even when the grow medium is saturated. The mix then tolerates frequent or rather generous watering, where natural fibre eventually runs short of air. Choose the natural fibre if you water by hand and at spaced intervals, and the version with perlite if your watering is frequent or automated.
Compaction, watering, rinsing
Do not compact the grow medium when filling the pot, because the fibre then loses its air passages and the roots suffocate. Pour and level without pressing down. Do not water with plain water either, since the grow medium provides no nutrients and the plant receives only what you pour on, from the very first watering. Finally, rinse thoroughly between two crops, which flushes out the salts left by the nutrient solution and restores the grow medium to its original conductivity.
A fertiliser formulated for coco fibre
Coco fibre exchanges elements with the nutrient solution: it holds back some and releases others, so a fertiliser designed for soil becomes unbalanced in it within a few waterings. The DualPart Coco fertiliser is dosed to take these exchanges into account, and it is added from the very first watering, as the grow medium contains no reserves. You then monitor the pH of the drainage water to check that the solution stays within its range.
🌿 Pot, ebb-and-flow table, seedlings
Pot growing is the main use, with complete nutrition supplied at every watering. On an ebb and flow table, the natural fibre holds water for several hours, which lets you space out the flood cycles. For seedlings, its fineness suits seeds well, provided you start feeding from the first true leaves. The overview of grow media places coco fibre among the other options.
♻️ Reusing the fibre
A coco coir grow medium lasts around 3 growing cycles, and reusing it takes preparation. At the end of a healthy crop, remove the root ball and larger debris, then rinse generously with clean water until the conductivity of the water coming out matches that of the water going in. This rinse flushes out the accumulated salts, which are the real limit on reuse, well before structure. After a root attack, however, the coir goes to the compost heap rather than into the next pot, as a fibrous grow medium holds spores far better than a mineral one. Finally, add a portion of fresh perlite with each reuse, as the coir loses a little of its volume and porosity with every cycle.
