For a pond, choose the food first according to the water temperature, measured in the morning. In cold water, fish digest slowly: winter formulas such as JBL ProPond Winter, with 22 % protein, are fed between 5 and 15 °C, and below 5 °C feeding stops. Summer formulas are used between 20 and 30 °C, and koi growth foods go up to 47 % protein above 16 °C.

Buoyancy follows the behaviour of the fish: a floating pellet shows what is eaten, while a sinking stick reaches bottom-feeding fish and sturgeon. In every case, a meal is limited to what is eaten within 5 minutes. For raising salmonids in aquaponics, fish farming feeds take over: the 45 % protein trout feed is rationed at 0.85 to 1.49 % of live weight per day depending on temperature, or 64 to 112 g per day for 30 trout of 250 g. Automatic feeders feed the fish while you are away. For the cold season, read Feeding fish in winter.
