If you only sow one thing in October, make it microgreens and baby leaves. Rocket, mustard, mizuna, garden cress, and pak choi can be sown densely, harvested with scissors between 20 and 35 days, and will regrow two or three times after cutting.
This growing method neatly sidesteps the light constraint, since you are not trying to form a heart but simply a few leaves. It also tolerates very high density planting, in the order of several hundred plants per square metre.
Always cut above the growing point, approximately 2 to 3 cm above the growing medium, otherwise regrowth will not occur. Autumn rocket also develops a noticeably sharper heat than in spring, a result of cold temperatures acting on the sulphur compounds.
