This miscanthus mulch is made from chopped stems of a tall grass grown in France. Light and airy, free of seeds and not easily blown about by the wind, it is laid 4 cm deep to keep the soil moist and hold back weeds for around 3 years.
The summary
- Nature: miscanthus stems, a tall grass with a spongy core, chopped into pieces of 0.5 to 2.5 cm.
- What sets it apart: it contains no seeds and resists compaction as well as wind.
- Quantity: a layer of 4 cm, or about 40 litres per square metre.
- Bags available: the 5 L bag fills one pot, the 200 L bag covers 5 m² of border.
- What to avoid: burying it fresh in the soil, because its decomposition draws down the soil's nitrogen.
- Shipping: a sealed bag or sack, from 0.5 to 20 kg depending on the size.
Chopped miscanthus stems for mulching beds, shrub bases and the vegetable patch
Guano Diffusion miscanthus mulch is made from stems shredded into pieces of 0.5 to 2.5 cm, free of seeds. Laid to a depth of 4 cm, or 40 litres per square metre, it stays put in the wind and lasts about 3 years. From the 5 L bag to the 200 L sack, it covers flower beds and vegetable plots, but not aquaponic tanks.
Miscanthus is a tall perennial grass, grown in France, whose stems have a spongy core. Chipped into pieces of 0.5 to 2.5 cm, they make an airy mulch, coarser than fine straw, which covers your soil without compacting it. This mulch stands out above all for its lack of seeds: unlike cereal straw or hemp mulch, it does not cause any shoots to sprout in the layer you have just laid. It suits flower beds, the bases of shrubs and hedges, planted paths and the vegetable garden alike.
🎋 An airy, long-lasting layer
Because its chips are rigid, the miscanthus layer stays airy instead of forming a crust, so rain or irrigation water passes through it down to the soil. It then limits evaporation and shields your roots from both intense heat and cold. Once in place, it withstands wind and run-off, which makes it suitable for slopes and exposed spots. Its organic matter, which makes up 94% of the product, breaks down slowly: the layer lasts about 3 years before merging into the soil, which spaces out the top-ups in your beds.
🧬 A grass grown without seedlings
The absence of seeds comes down to the plant itself. The miscanthus grown in France is a clone of Miscanthus × giganteus, a triploid, sterile hybrid: its panicle emerges late, or not at all, which makes fertilisation and seed formation very unlikely. This miscanthus is therefore propagated by its rhizomes, planted in the field, and not by seedling. For you, this means that no miscanthus shoot will come up in your borders, and that the mulch does not sow unwanted weeds, unlike cereal straw, which always retains a few grains. This cleanliness makes it a good choice between perennials or at the foot of a hedge, where hand weeding would be tedious.
The miscanthus stays on the surface, with no need to dig it in
The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of miscanthus, written C/N, reaches 105, a high value that marks a material rich in cellulose and lignin. If dug in fresh, it would be broken down by micro-organisms that draw nitrogen from the soil, to the detriment of your plants. Leave it on the surface instead, where it breaks down slowly without depriving the roots.
🧺 Laying it 4 cm deep
Weed the surface and apply your organic fertiliser before mulching, because the layer then protects the microbial life of soil that has already been fed. Spread the miscanthus in a layer 4 cm thick, which works out at an average of 40 litres per square metre, then water to settle everything. A 5 L bag therefore covers about 0.12 m², which is a 40 cm diameter pot, a 40 L bag covers one square metre, and the large 200 L bag covers nearly 5 m² of border or vegetable patch. Pull the chips slightly away from the crown of your plants to leave the base of the stems exposed to the air. Beneath the layer, buried ollas and irrigation jars carry on watering without the mulch having to be moved.
Around the base of shrubs
A ring of miscanthus keeps the moisture around the trunk and limits competition from weeds.
In borders
Its pale chips cover the soil between perennials without sowing unwanted seeds.
In the vegetable garden
Laid between the rows of tomatoes or squashes, it keeps the fruit clean and the water in the soil.
In pots and planters
On the compost of a large pot, it slows drying out between two waterings.
Feed the soil before covering it
Miscanthus provides almost no nitrogen, as it contains only 0.4%. Before laying it in the vegetable garden, therefore, spread an organic fertiliser such as seabird guano, rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, then rake it into the surface. The mulch layer then protects this input from being washed away by rain, and your vegetables benefit from it throughout the season.
🌱 Around an aquaponic greenhouse
Around an aquaponic system, miscanthus is used first of all for soil-based crops: the neighbouring vegetable patch, pots watered with water from partial water changes, and the greenhouse paths. In a greenhouse where the pond takes up part of the space, it also covers the soil of the growing strips and keeps the moisture in. It should not, however, go into the system's grow beds, whose clay pebbles are kept bare so that no fragments end up in the fish water. The sludge removed from the settling tank or the mechanical filter, rich in waste, is spread at the foot of shrubs and then covered with miscanthus, which shields it from the sun and limits odours. The article on outdoor aquaponics greenhouses and kits shows how these installations fit into the garden.
